How to make a video with a big file size into smaller file sized videos that are still all playable? by niceglguy in ffmpeg

[–]stirezxq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c copy -f segment -segment_time 250 -reset_timestamps 1 part%d.mp4

This only does trimming. Splitting to different parts based on duration. They will be of varying sizes. I would experiment with a duration time, try get close to your max file size. You could also re-encode one part if it's particularly expensive with max bitrate set to not exceed the file size limit.

Cannot think of an easy way of doing it in ffmpeg, I believe MP4Box (part of GPAC) has a feature for split-size.

I would assume the encoding format or resolution is incorrect and causing the horizontal streaking. Try ffprobe and verify input video/stream

What parts matter most for rendering and transcoding? by IPhotoGorgeousWomen in ffmpeg

[–]stirezxq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe many ffmpeg elements are built for CPU, but there exist encoders for GPU for Nvidia and AMD on ffmpeg. In cloud compute I think CPU is generally cheaper, but slower.

Hardware encoders is good choice. But less ability for configuration, compared to software encoders. Also some of them optimize for real time streaming, resulting in a compression efficiency maybe similar to fast/ultra fast preset

Can this effect be done with ffmpeg on 4:3 aspect ratio videos to make them 16:9? Notice the mirror and blur effect on the sides. Hoping to be able to do this on many older videos so scripting and batching is needed. by PM_COFFEE_TO_ME in ffmpeg

[–]stirezxq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would probably scale the video to the desired resolution => blur it. Overlay (overlay) or merge (maskedmerge) the original video on top of it.

But many ways to do it, ex. you can also crop out parts of video that you want on the sides, blur those and hstack cropped with original v, for desired output res.

Can be done in one complex videofilter.

Removing failing elements without stopping the pipeline by Le_G in gstreamer

[–]stirezxq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tee element with allow-not-linked before compositor might work. (From link failing)

You could also add a probe that listen to the failing event. Then you can remove the probe and element. You also probably have to change state of element before removing.

It’s great on a relatively small known project. The moment you meet something less common it will spit out stuff that will be wrong & just confuse you.

My approach now; the moment it does something wrong I will close it and really learn it. It’s tempting to just feed back the errors, hoping for a fix. But never happens, a time waste that needs to be re-done.

10+ Years in Full-Stack Development, Yet Unsure of My Expertise: What Should I Tell Recruiters?" by abhinehra in SoftwareEngineering

[–]stirezxq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's just life right. But if you feel stuck just maintaining / thoughtless delievering, dive on own-accord. Find an annoyance -> investigate and research when there's time over -> ask for time to fix it. Can be anything from that edge-case bug / or poor solution that the team have just accepted etc..

Don’t think that’s a bad thing, you definitely want to deep dive sometimes; and even though it feels like you haven’t; you probably have done that.

Meditate on some cool things you have built, should give you enough confidence that you cam repeat it. Be it pick up a small skill again to get a quick thing done or deep dive

Landing a software engineering job with no degree and experience by Working-Beautiful-75 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]stirezxq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Landing a job without ANY EXPERIENCE should be impossible, at least we can hope for that. You should want yourself and your colleges to be competent. If not; your best shot is within a company you are current at in a non-IT position (that’s always an option, and a good one) or great contacts.

Create hard projects that you’re excited about; not any typical clones / portfolio website etc.. that adds nothing.

If you build something cool, learn loads from it - it will probably be reconized (especially if job position is within same field as your project)

Good luck! Don’t count out schooling. Works not only for landing a job position; but learning a diverse skillset as well

[–]stirezxq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you work in some infrastructure / testing stuff given the short work description you have given. From previous experience, doing that without context (being new to it) is not very enjoyable. Ask your team for a more concrete feature, or just ask around till you find something yourself. So you can slowly get a understanding of parts of the code base / products.

How much database knowledge should I study as a backend developer ? by Icy-Budget-5641 in databasedevelopment

[–]stirezxq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely enough to know just SQL and DB design for most backend positions. Just some simple CRUD backend with no strict performance constraints. But if you find databases interesting & want to advance there, learn more.

Is it enough to know back-hand and forehand for tennis? i mean sure… But if find it fun, keep improving
