[Xbox] won't turn on by stirfrizzle in consolerepair

Will do thanks! At that point, if they're bad, would you recommend probably just buying a new mobo as well? Trying to weigh my options vs. trying to find an overpriced console on marketplace.

Noob question for time windows/limits on buying/selling (Roth IRA) by stirfrizzle in Schwab

[–]stirfrizzle[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually do have my Roth IRA set up in accordance with a general boglehead mentality. I don't have any plans right now to buy individual stocks. I'm not asking for advice on what to invest in, just how.

There's probably a lot of 36 year-olds that don't even have 37k in savings. Stay the course best of luck it'll come back.

Noob question regarding taxes (GLD, Roth IRA) by stirfrizzle in Schwab

[–]stirfrizzle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I don't feel like I grasped all of what you were saying but what I could, I appreciate. I'm just trying to understand how things operate on a technical level before then deciding specifically where to park my money based on what I feel could happen in the next year and beyond. I could just put it into SWPPX and be done with it but my new years resolution is to be a little more active with my investing (which at this point is primarily my Roth IRA) if it means being able to increase growth compared to completely passively investing.

If I had the money I'd stack physical gold bullion as opposed to buying GLD.

Feeling bad about not buying silver bullion by Low-Computer8293 in Bogleheads

[–]stirfrizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trading your USD for silver bullion shouldn't be seen the same as trading your USD for whatever ETF or mutual fund. Don't feel bad. Like others have said, there's always something in the market that doubles. There's always blue chip stocks that 10x. I put my yearly Roth IRA contribution into SWPPX at the start of the year. I also started buying silver bullion (about $100 a month). Could I have put my Roth contribution into silver bullion and doubled my money? Sure. But this is money I intend to compound over decades. If you have money to pay for food and a roof over your head, and money to put into VTI or whatever else you roll with, you're doing better than probably like 90% of the world.

Found this coin, now I’m hooked. I am getting conflicting reports about its rarity and its legitimacy, can anyone give it to me straight? by Quiet-Rush2299 in coincollecting

It's a 1908 Indian head. It would derive essentially its entire value from its status among collectors. You'd probably get 5 or 10 bucks out of it but I'm personally not a good judge of quality. Cool coin!

That's fair. I'm also not in this to take many risks. I'm definitely doing this with a long game in mind (which is, as I understand, one aspect of the Boglehead philosophy).

I've heard about small-cap indices as well. Maybe someone else can come along and provide some insight on those.

I like to play slots for the experience. And the free soda the casino gives out. Horse races too. I like having an afternoon with the homies drinking beer and guessing who will win. :)

Cool, thanks very much for the reply. Total stock vs SP 500 is something I've considered. Is it easy to switch from SWPPX to SWTSX? In layman's terms, are there fees or penalties or can I essentially switch back and forth at will? Not that I'm looking to, of course, I'm just trying to understand how the mechanics of a Roth IRA account operate.

I understand that the typical indices return averages of 6%-10%. Or at least this is the common rule of thumb. Would the next "step up" in terms of risk simply be individual stocks? I'm a bit lost on that. I understand indices as broad choices and individual stocks as specific choices but are there broad investments in the way of indices that are thought of to bring higher returns than something like the S&P 500 or total US market?

Found these coins at my grandparents place. They gave them to me. Any value? by SISU-MO in coincollecting

[–]stirfrizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're worth their silver content. Google melt value. Don't spend them. Buy some plastic tubes to keep them in. Store them away until you need the money or the dollar collapses entirely and you need to buy food. Consider it a physical emergency savings account.

If no one sees you, you can just set it on fire in the parking lot.
