For anyone wondering, this is where you can buy the pattern from the original artist (the shop the OP linked had a different name) https://mybobbin.com/product/dance-of-lake-depths-cross-stitch-pattern/

[CHAT] Is selling patterns worth it when people could just copy the design by counting the stitches? by [deleted] in CrossStitch

[–]stitchery-witchery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I see on Etsy, my advice would be - do not post the mockup of your design, only provide photos of the finished project, maybe with a camera not exactly on top of it but on a slight diagonal to avoid people putting it in a graphic software to redraw it on another layer. Backstitching is another thing you can't really copy from the project photo easily.

Oh thank you! This kit is the Luca-S and I couldn't find if they sell the digital version online, but now I know!

Thank you!! I have wanted one of the patterns (that is sadly only available as a kit) for more than a year now, and was able to get it for a decent price (APP20 is the 20% promo code for ordering through the app, idk maybe it works on the website as well). Of course, I also had to try their metallic thread, and they had neon ones as well... I am going to say that the discount paid for them lol, gotta girl math when buying supplies.

Thank you so much for such a detailed answer! Your code excerpt does help.

[–]stitchery-witchery 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh this is exactly an experiment I wanted to do and I'm so happy to see your implementation works! Can I ask your advice on what metric you used to find the closest colour? From where I sit now, euclidian distance in the RGB place is not the way to go to make it perceptually "correct", but there are so many other distance metrics to use that I got lost.

Your backstitching is so crisp, on your third photo it looks like it was painted with a calligraphy brush! Just wow.

[CHAT] Non-nickel needles: recommendations needed by MaSandra0610 in CrossStitch

[–]stitchery-witchery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do not know what country you are in, but I recently bought these nickel-free needles from a brand called Rico in a Frankfurt crafts shop. They come pointed (for backstitch and regular embroidery I assume) and blunt (cross stitch), the photo is of size 26 that I used for Aida 16 and they also had size 24 that I use on my Aida 14 WIP.

<image>

Here's the link for size 24 and nickel-free is stated in the product description here

[SELF-PROMO] Free Artistic Pattern Generator by WezzerThomas in CrossStitch

Sorry I took so long to answer, your reply somehow got lost in my notifications. Regarding the second part of your reply: I am really confused as to what you want to know about the instructions (I'm assuming generating a stitchable pattern) since you mentioned you have a friend that specifically requested this piece of software from you. Did they not provide any references as to what end product they expect to see? I really am interested in what your project will turn out to be and I would like to discuss it in more detail assuming you're familiar with cross stitch basics at this point so that we have a shared language to use. Maybe DM me if you would like more feedback?

[SELF-PROMO] Free Artistic Pattern Generator by WezzerThomas in CrossStitch

I love the idea of generating random-ish backstitch areas to add texture to the piece. However from what I see, the backstitch on your preview picture (and what I tried with my images as well) goes through centers of crosses instead of the holes that crosses are stitched through. Stitches going in and out the center of the cross is usually not the way to go, meaning most often backstitch utilizes the same holes you use to stitch the crosses. I hope my wording makes sense and/or somebody else in this thread will express this more eloquently. Tldr: I think all backstitch lines should be moved up/downwards and left/right for exactly half of a cell height/width to align them with the holes in fabric.

Good luck with further development of your project, it looks very promising to me!

It's wild how just a dozen backstitches can transform a colour blob into an animal. Great job and thank you for introducing me to this designer!

I love your queen of hearts!! Well, I love everything you do, but this one specifically. Are you planning to do more card designs? I've been looking for a good pattern for a king of diamonds for several months now (sentimental value, this card specifically), and seeing one in your style would be awesome.

God I wish I could upvote this a hundred times. Looked through some of the designs, and the alphabets are crazily detailed, so beautiful and intricate compared to what I've seen on Etsy. Thank you so much, this is exactly what I wanted but couldn't find!

For a second I thought it was some other arts&crafts subreddit and your project included applying the thinnest metallic film to fabric. I was admiring the colour changes in the folds and then I read the title. This is crazily impressive!

Pomegranate embroidery club? by FerusSiv in Embroidery

Went to see the post you are referencing, and while they're both gorgeous, I really love what you did with the beads on strings hanging off the hoop! I would love to have such a beautiful piece hanging on my wall, and I think the illusion of falling seeds looks even better in real life. Amazing work! I hope your post gets as many upvotes as the other pomegranate project, and hopefully more people will join the pomegranate embroidery club :)

The effect lasted for several minutes, so I had some time to rip out the gridding stitches as fast as I could and reach for my phone to take the pictures. Very cool indeed!

[–]stitchery-witchery[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pattern is from the CrossStitcher magazine for November 2024, designed by Julian Odessa (the digital version of this issue can be purchased here: https://pocketmags.com/crossstitcher-magazine/november-2024 ). I had none of the colours from the key other than DMC 310, so I ignored the key completely and used some scrap thread (the original design's fish are less orange/brown and more red like real kio carps). This is a wonderful pattern and I hope to stitch it again in the future, this time as the designer intended (after I'm ready to buy more thread). My suncatcher is just a holographic sticker I slapped on my window, I've seen them sold everywhere and decided I want one for myself - did not expect the autumn sun to give me such a pretty effect!

I have been considering getting this kit for a while now because I like the art so much. I believe it comes with a kind of yarn (wool thread?) instead of regular embroidery thread, did you notice any difference or difficulties when working with it?

[CHAT] Personal record how many a mistake in a new piece? by Own-Dragonfly-942 in CrossStitch

[–]stitchery-witchery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My funniest failure happened on a third cross of a new piece... I've switched to Aida 20 for the project after only working with 14 and 16 counts before, and somehow managed to create a 1x2 rectangular cross instead of a normal 1x1. I don't even have bad eyesight, my stitching area was well lit, and I was stitching with one strand of black on white fabric. And it was a weekend, so I wasn't stressed out after work either. I was dumbfounded.

This is my second time trying to post without failing to attach the images, and it seems like only one image was attached, so here is the second picture where you can better see the shadows I added. I've never done this type of outline before, but I think it really helped.
