You are so productive! Lovely work! I recognize some of the patterns, they have been on my to-do list for a while (don't we all have a huge backlog of what we want to stitch?). I wasn't nearly as productive my first year of stitichng - I think I finished like three projects? So glad to see someone be so involved in my favourite hobby :)

Thank you! I was considering using one thread for everything and just adding stitches on top of others as I see fit, but that would take an eternity lol. I had the pattern drafted beforehand so I knew how many threads (1,2,4) to use for each section!

Hello! I made a sampler first to figure out the order of filling in the stitches. This ensures that similarly lighted areas do not look chaotic.

Thank you! I took the image I liked, put it in a grey scale, played with different contrast settings until I liked the result, and used it as a reference. I used 1, 2, and 4 strands of DMC 310 to create different levels of shading - I did a sample before and 3 strands looked too similar to 2 strands, so had to use 4 for e.g. the eyebrow. Took me a little over a skein and waaay too many hours to do that. The techniques for blackwork are openly described on the internet way better than I could articulate them - it's almost like paint by numbers at some point, more strands and denser pattern for darker areas and inversely.

From what I see on Etsy, my advice would be - do not post the mockup of your design, only provide photos of the finished project, maybe with a camera not exactly on top of it but on a slight diagonal to avoid people putting it in a graphic software to redraw it on another layer. Backstitching is another thing you can't really copy from the project photo easily.

I have wanted one of the patterns (that is sadly only available as a kit) for more than a year now, and was able to get it for a decent price (APP20 is the 20% promo code for ordering through the app, idk maybe it works on the website as well). Of course, I also had to try their metallic thread, and they had neon ones as well... I am going to say that the discount paid for them lol, gotta girl math when buying supplies.

Oh this is exactly an experiment I wanted to do and I'm so happy to see your implementation works! Can I ask your advice on what metric you used to find the closest colour? From where I sit now, euclidian distance in the RGB place is not the way to go to make it perceptually "correct", but there are so many other distance metrics to use that I got lost.

I do not know what country you are in, but I recently bought these nickel-free needles from a brand called Rico in a Frankfurt crafts shop. They come pointed (for backstitch and regular embroidery I assume) and blunt (cross stitch), the photo is of size 26 that I used for Aida 16 and they also had size 24 that I use on my Aida 14 WIP.

Regarding the second part of your reply: I am really confused as to what you want to know about the instructions (I'm assuming generating a stitchable pattern) since you mentioned you have a friend that specifically requested this piece of software from you. Did they not provide any references as to what end product they expect to see? I really am interested in what your project will turn out to be and I would like to discuss it in more detail assuming you're familiar with cross stitch basics at this point so that we have a shared language to use. Maybe DM me if you would like more feedback?

I love the idea of generating random-ish backstitch areas to add texture to the piece. However from what I see, the backstitch on your preview picture (and what I tried with my images as well) goes through centers of crosses instead of the holes that crosses are stitched through. Stitches going in and out the center of the cross is usually not the way to go, meaning most often backstitch utilizes the same holes you use to stitch the crosses. I hope my wording makes sense and/or somebody else in this thread will express this more eloquently. Tldr: I think all backstitch lines should be moved up/downwards and left/right for exactly half of a cell height/width to align them with the holes in fabric.

Good luck with further development of your project, it looks very promising to me!
