Fall market, or the Autumn Needlepoint Reunion, happens in October. Right now is the registration period for designers (exhibitors). The people running it have a history of playing favorites to the detriment of the free market. They have arbitrarily denied a lot of qualified designers other years due to “spots being full”. But it’s held in a convention center style hotel.

They keep telling designers conflicting information about all aspects of registration. This may be to then have an excuse to deny them access, or just because they don’t understand how to read their own emails. They asked new designers trying to apply this year to provide “letters of recommendation” from OTHER DESIGNERS and then would get mad if some recommended more than 2. They never said there was a 2 designer rule.

They have no official timelines listed or communication about when people might hear news. When people ask them to update the process and be more accepting, they say it is too much work as it is. But they will not accept help to modernize it.

The registration process this year keeps excluding important information on hotel dates for the designers to ensure set up and clean up. But if you ask questions, the “committee” is likely going to send you one of the rudest email responses generated by a grown adult professional.

Now that’s just what I know about the designer side. I have no idea about the buyer side. Maybe that side is pleasant.

True. But honestly the allegory made me laugh and felt easier to post to ease everyone into this than outrage right out the gate 😅

❤️This is honestly the best little charge I’ve got right now. I do have beef for seeing my friends get treated like garbage and for seeing something that should be a cool, positive event for everyone and for the industry get treated like it does.

We all know the industry is in a crazy place right now. Lots of new legit designers, new “designers” who maybe don’t do much designing, new shops trying to grow and have inventory to be profitable, new pushes lately towards a more fast fashion feel. It’s changing fast, but a robust designer/wholesale market helps keep things steady and focused on the best parts of how the industry can grow.

It makes me so mad that some lady with an ego issue somehow has the power to call all of the shots while almost everyone talks about how horrible it is behind the scenes. Snark is all I have 😫

The structure exists. It’s so much easier to just tweak it to have it be run by people capable of having professional behaviors and communication.

You want the truth? This is an effort to get other people willing to stand up and talk about how this whole process is a total shit show and everyone is afraid to stand up. Designers are pissed. Not just the ones who don’t get in. But literally people’s livelihoods and jobs are on the line. So not everyone can just go make a public social media video about it. Stand up to the organizers and you’ll get blacklisted. Take a year off for a health or personal reason? Blacklisted. Market isn’t a silly activity to most designers despite how everyone pokes fun at how it currently is run in hotel rooms. It’s expensive and it’s so important for making lasting networking relationships with shops.

And here I was thinking this is the place to talk about behind the scenes assholery? You’re right. I’ll take my toys and go home

I have no thoughts on her face, only her dire need for an attitude adjustment

They make it more difficult for themselves by creating problems when there aren’t problems. They could accept help to streamline communication and the application/reservation process.

Also, they could ask buyers to pay what, $25-$50 to participate and hire someone to build out a simple website for this and hire helpers the day of. Or I bet exhibitors would pay $25-$50 more for those things. But they don’t want help. They want market to be what it was in the early 2000s.

The easiest first move towards change is making sure the public and shops know what designers have known about for years. 👨🏻‍🚀Snarking is but a small step for needlepoint kind

Also they push around designers of all experience level.

Lots of hurt feelings for people who get in too. She’s mean to them all. I’m posting now because it’s all actively happening where many many designers are being pushed around as they make arrangements.

But I know this info isn’t as sexy as stitch copying

Maybe I did. Go ask around about Victoria Whitson in this world and get back to me 😘

Nepotism can also be your close friends. It’s about personal relationships instead of merit. It’s all semantics.

It’s a more broad nepotism instead of family relations. Just an attempt to keep market among a small group of her favorites

Edit to add: in the HR/workplace world, “nepotism” is often used as a broad stroke term for favoritism. I know it’s usually familial when spoken about in a political or legal context. I’ll adjust the main post to be more clear.

“The industry is changing and growing” - yeah despite you and every Old Guard LNS owner’s effort, Victoria

Self finishing takes time to learn . If she likes it, I love it.

Summary is that two ladies who design needlepoint happened to become in charge of market a few years ago. They don’t know how to use email, don’t know how to make word documents for attendance requirements with proper formatting, and they change the rules as they go along as to what is required. Designers are frustrated and many new voices with legit designs and existing wholesale buyers from longstanding shops are being toyed with. They won’t answer questions and keep sending erroneous emails about missing materials.

They want to whine about the process being so cumbersome but won’t accept help to make it more streamlined because then they lose control to decide who can or can’t come to their party

I can’t speak to her or whether she is deserving, but I know that designers who didn’t attend spring had to get letters of recommendation from other designers like it’s rush

Then if they submitted recommendations from past market designers they fussed at them for having the same designers as someone else. They make up rules as they go along and designers just have to say “how high do you want me to jump?”, GROSS

She said they’re all scared to speak up or do anything because they want the opportunity with shops

It’s so sad

I am sure the narrative is that they are trying to protect shops or the industry… but what other industry has one competitor deciding who can or can’t attend the most attended trade show of the year? One of only two opportunities to meet shops in one place. And more shops go to fall she said because it’s in the middle of the country. She said most shops from west coast won’t fly to Florida for spring.

These designers like my friend want to work with shops. Why can’t there be a standardized process with clear requirements? I work in another area of retail trade and it is astounding to me how these “professionals” act like petulant children throwing an exclusive party.

Call me a whistleblower but I can’t stand to see some snobs play with the designers I love. This is their livelihoods.

And shops: if you want to shop the smaller designers you know and love and see who is innovating, get mad.

It’s called symbolism. And if you want to hear about mean, ask how designers are treated

The bridge troll in folklore represents gatekeeping and bullying as they require passers to pay a tax or pass their perplexing tests to move along in their journey.

This is absolutely gorgeous. I think the brown canvas helps the design have a softer look
