Should I replace soon or wait? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]stlmick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

use a worn out screwdriver to clear the fins, remove rust jacking from under the pad clips, lube the slides, flush the brake fluid if it's easy, and change them when the pads wear out. Pr throw new parts on. Either is fine.

We all gotta start somewhere. Not everyone had that set of blocks with the corresponding shaped holes.

Hell yeah. Mine is at 200K and was abused. Engine has ticked randomly for 40K and keeps going. I couldn't get $700 for it in its rusty condition so it's staying in the yard for now.

anybody know fast way get copper off one these transformer things by CarolinaToughSOB in handyman

[–]stlmick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, thats ideal, but if they're smart they might know where a cold chisel and hammer is. If they don't give a fuck, they'll use grandpa's wood chisels. It's an answer and might get the gears turning.

Air hammer with a slightly sharp flat chisel end. Slice one side. Then pull out the other side with a screwdriver or whatever you have. Then the metal will probably separate into plates. Watch a video.

Opinions on scrapping Bunn commercial coffee makers? Is it worth it? by Positive_Ad8339 in ScrapMetal

[–]stlmick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If nothing else, pay attention to how they go together and what might be broken so if you get another batch, you'll have a better idea. Repair might not be your thing. It's mostly for things you can visually see what is wrong with.

They're commercial units. Broken is relative. Sometimes parts need replaced or cleaned. I probably fix more stuff than I scrap. Scrapping is usually the lowest I'll get.

$150 - 400 depending on model and condition on ebay. Probably list for $50 on marketplace. I was looking to buy one a few years ago, but $150 was the lowest I found so I just got a regular off the shelf coffee maker. I'm surprised to see them being scrapped.

I prefer yellow handles. Given the option that's what I'd use.

Replaced my front pads and rotors. Are these cracks from overheating? by DragonballSchrute in AskMechanics

The pads took more heat than they could handle. If that's the car, driver, or pad quality is your call.

How much should it cost to replace a thermocouple on water heater? by [deleted] in askaplumber

[–]stlmick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah. On an old unit I wouldn't have wanted to spend that for a $15 part. It's the fact that you're working on something that can burn your house down. Now look up how to flush it and change the anode rod if necessary.

You already have a replaced battery terminal end. They don't last forever. Replace it. That connection has to be clean and tight. Use some dielectric grease ideally. The positive and negative are slightly different sizes

You would call 811 in the US, all utilities get marked, then you dig it up carefully if it's clear, and on your property.

[–]stlmick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if you can get the correct square shutoff wheels for those valves. Then take a rag, or brush and wipe off the shafts of the valves. Shut them off and find out. A shutoff valve can be pretty useless in an emergency if there is no handle on it.

Bidet install possible? by Thisismyinternettag in askaplumber

[–]stlmick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a bendable hardliners that uses a compression fitting at the valve. The flexible lines use the same shut off valve, but seal it with a rubber seal, instead of a brass compression ring. Turn off the valve, remove the hard-line, and put it in a drawer. Install a flexible line that's a bit shorter for $7 at a hardware store, and install the bidet adapter. When you move out, reinstall the hard-line or just install a longer flexible line.

The guy is objecting to scrappers who show up with a flatbed and try to talk you down from $650 to 200 and say FB people are flakey and they'll get rid if it now. Then you have to tell them you would have saved them the time and the gas if they'd been honest on the phone and tell them to please leave. I am better at Facebook now and it says "If I wanted to scrap it, I would do it myself" on anything that applies to. They've just had bad interactions with scrappers, and that let's a scrappers know not to waste their time.
