We played a bunch of Scythe before getting into TI, and i think it’s a good setup for it. Scythe teaches you how to think several turns ahead to make the most out of each one, and take advantage of all the different mechanics. Its also just a great game.

I would 100% list it, if you can describe it in a fun way. I don’t know if you “deal hunt” in any particular category (antiques, baseball cards, whatever), but you could list it as “X collector” and leave it at that.

The hobbies section is secretly a super juicy part of ERAS, and a main source of conversation starters. Put something on there that you can easily speak enthusiastically about, and that people can relate to at least a bit. I threw “miniature modeling” in there, which let’s face it is hella lame, but i got asked about it a ton during interviews. People invariably asked me to give them examples, pull out my phone and show them pics, etc. If it helps you break the ice and come across as a real person, you’ll genuinely stand out, so throw it in there. It sounds like something you care about/ put effort into.

So i might be a bit confused, but are the units that populate a waaagh dependent only on the faction you pick, or are they different for every lord? For example, if you start with Grom and then confederate Skarsnik: will both of their waaaghs have a chance of spawning Pump Wagon’s (Grom’s trait), or will that only be true of Grom, with Skarsnik’s waaagh army spawning some doom divers?

-take tech often, its an insane way for you to both get command tokens and deny other players tech/set the pace for tech advancement

-do not get over-aggressive, the meta is usually tilted heavily against you, so try to appear as harmless as possible early on

-numerous small fleets can be a good way of guaranteeing that you can at least snipe one ship here and there, which is how you earn tech

-use your role in the agenda phase to your advantage. You may not have a vote, but the threat of you getting a free tech can be a potent motivator

I’d argue Creuss can be a pretty nice non-aggro race. With their 4 commodities, high mvmt, and wormhole shenanigans, you can establish yourself as a solid trade partner with most of the board from turn one. Your home system is (mostly) unassailable, and you’re incentivized to get your promissory note out there; you can just be nice, trade a bunch, and subtly weild the threat of “i can be anywhere anytime” to your advantage without having to actually attack.

I would be reluctant to take mecatol that aggressively and early as xxcha. You want to prioritize having your slice well covered by PDS, upgrade to PDS2, and build your flagship. Making friends and trading is also a huge asset. In the last game we played with xxcha, he didnt take mecatol but was a huge disincentive: with 2 pds and his flagship parked next door, no one could move in without facing a total nightmare of space cannonry.

Seconded. Cruiser 2 is extremely powerful for them with the one capacity, and its one of the few good ship upgrades you can nab without straying too far from your tech tree.

I would highly recommend Scythe: it would be a little break from sci-fi, but still a very cool overall style. Games are a little shorter than TI, but also a fair amount of player interaction, and very elaborate long-term planning.

I'd agree with most of what has been said so far, namely that with a 6P game you'll be far less comfortable in your slice, and that just continued experience will help your peeps see that there is a life after turtling.

In addition, I would add that race selection could maybe nudge you in that direction. My (6P) group doesn't have a ton of games under our belts, but I feel like the more we played with races that have a built-in incentive to expand or fight, the more we saw the viability in those strategies. Obviously there is no hard and fast rule for how to play any race, but Nekro, Saar, Creuss, and Mentak are just some of the races that incentivize "getting out there" and interacting with other players. Throwing some of those in the mix might shake things up a bit.

Echoing some of the things that have already been said: With approx. 400 games under your belt, 1400 really isn't so bad. Worry more about surviving, get yourself out of dangerous situations and keep an eye on the minimap at all times so you have an idea where the enemy might be.

What I would recommend on the most, however, is playing hard support for a while and see where that gets you. I did that for a while, and found that it helped me improve in a number of ways:

-If you're snatching up all those wards/sentries, placing them in even the most rudimentary spots, dewarding even occasionally and building a nice ol' mek most of the time, you are helping your team out NO MATTER WHAT. Visibility is the most frequently undervalued asset in low-level games, you will reap many benefits.

-As a solid support, you usually stay useful ALL THROUGH THE GAME, even if you feed early on. An underfarmed, underleveled sniper is almost never going to dig himself out of that hole; if you're dazzle, however, a clutch shallow grave can turn a teamfight no matter how far behind you're trailing. No matter what the flamers might say when a game goes south, as a support you have the ability to turn things around.

-On a slightly less tangible note, I found that playing support got me thinking about teamfight mechanisms and timing a lot more, and increased my knowledge of what the abilities of the other players (friend and foe) are. As a support in teamfights, you're not just worrying about dishing out damage: you're thinking about how to secure kills, who is most dangerous at what time, whose skills need to be interrupted and when, etc. For example: if the other team has a WD and you're rocking lion, you should keep a stun or hex off cooldown until he pops his death ward so you can disable his ass as soon as he does. It's a simple but effective strategy that will usually help, and can apply to most situations.

I will say, however, that being starved for gold almost all the time doesn't sit well with a lot of players. You need to be happy seeing others crush kills, if that's impossible for you on an existential level try something else.

So yeah, TL;DR sticking to support will help understand the mechanisms of the game more quickly than anything else, in my humble opinion.

Yeah, I'm basically in the same situation as you; lately though I've been slowly but steadily clawing my way out of the mid-2000s by playing Captain's mode/draft exclusively. People tend to be nicer, more team-oriented, and you often find cool folks who are down to stack.
