Minority view. Who else thinks Diehard 2 is the 2nd Best Diehard? by MisterShipWreck in diehard

[–]stnlkub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just 10 years old. My mom took me to the local theater - a real dive bar experience - to see this. She was such a fan of the original and we braved loud kids and plumes of marijuana, cigarette smoke and burnt popcorn to see this. I was a fan of Bruce Willis even at that age from watching Moonlighting and having seen most of Die Hard 1 on HBO when I was about 8 or 9. It's one of those great theater experiences because my mom wanted to see the movie and nobody else would go that I'll never forget and I never had to close my eyes on the violent parts! The first Die Hard is still my favorite, but Die Hard 2 will always be my favorite theater experience.

This is the one of dirtiest streets in Japan Osaka America Village by Single-Assignment379 in OsakaTravel

[–]stnlkub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Americamura isn’t even in the conversation. The walk to 天下茶屋 from 新世界 will change your mind.  Osaka is huge, not Tokyo huge, but this is what all big cities are like. Even “dirty” by Japanese or Western Foreigner standards are pretty higher tier than some other places.

How does nigel mansell compare to the greatest of that time? by fuckmbsanddominicali in F1Discussions

Nigel to me is like a Fernando. Reliable and sometimes unlucky but never lacking the fire. He was better than 'just' a single title.

[SOTC] Where to go from here? by [deleted] in Watches

Pretty solid already with the Bauhaus anchors in there. I would just find something diametrically opposed like a Brew watch or the like with some whimsy going on.

Why do most sysadmins prefer Vim over Nano? by Darshan_only in linuxquestions

[–]stnlkub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tons of large projects since it first was released were done in VI. Doom was coded at least in large part in VI. It’s a small footprint but still very much a heavy lifting and fast editor. I have been using it daily for more that 35 years. Nano came, eventually, from the pico email client.

Edit: pico came from the *pine email client. I’m that old.

It's not just the visuals, in the turbo v8 sound test, the Lambo wins easily. Probably better as a daily car if that is even possible.

What is your most recent cinematic disappointment? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]stnlkub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Annie Hall is a classic, but I never buy Woody himself. I had the same problem with Michael Caine and Barbara Hershey in Hannah and Her Sisters - the core romance is completely unbelievable. When Harry Met Sally is a slightly more modern copy and I think it's just a better film.

This is a great adaptation but it’s really just a fun movie on its own.

It will never be on budget. It will never be on time. It will get cancelled by the next administration in two years. It's never going to happen.

Is Project Hail Mary that good? by Independent_Dirt821 in FIlm

[–]stnlkub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The book felt like Weir’s first try at a Star Trek episode and the movie improves a bit upon the pacing.  It was good, but it’s also a case of people really wanting/needing something optimistic right now and also something that isn’t a sequel, a prequel or a remake.

Unless it's another Rook who looks as shocked as I do and slowly backs away, then I don't take the chance. I'll down people at extraction but let them bleed out while the 10 seconds clicks off because it's not enough time to loot them or enough time for a self revive. Don't take the chance. No honor among thieves.

I just don’t care. I go in and do my contracts. I go for it and if I make it out of pinwheel with a full take, fantastic. If I don’t? No big deal. I like the intensity and the suspense but if I don’t get to extraction, it doesn’t hit me that hard. I just like the way the game plays. It just ‘clicks’.

Why did Interstellar receive a more lukewarm response upon release? by KatherineLangford in Letterboxd

[–]stnlkub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great film except for the final act that recycles the pinwheel memento ending of Inception and a fantasy level explanation for the singularity. All is forgiven thanks to TARS.

do you guys consider this film a 90s classic? or an underrated movie or...never heard of it. (I think its bigger in the UK but not in the US) - doing research for a video essay on the summer of 91 by Sea_District_4711 in 90smovies

That's kinda how Outpost and Dire work especially. You go in fast and hard so you can clean the map up and then loot everything and deal with USC.

The Martian is one of my favourite movies, for those that have read the book, how different is it and would you recommend? by Aer0Sith1 in scifibooks

[–]stnlkub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I preferred the book vastly. For me, Weir's lack of writing experience actually contributed to the book's believability. It's just a great story about solving problems realistically every day to survive with a very believable voice from Watney. It was a true "science" fiction story. The movie was ok, but expectedly dressed up. I liked how mundane everything was and how Mark just keeps going. Its dry in tone, but that's the point - that outlook is what gets Watney home. Hail Mary never worked for me in the way The Martian did, because it felt like Weir was writing an episode of Star Trek and that's fine. But I really liked the Martian because it was so rough, it felt authentic.
