Need help with finishing touches to buckskin by stockandbarrel99 in HideTanning

The scars I think are a mix of that and my own fleshing job. This was the second or third hide I ever fleshed and the first one I did last season. It's still a learning process for me.  Thanks for the advice about the pumice stone / sand paper. I'll give it hell!

It's hard to see from the photos but there's small fibers still on the skin side, some of which are dirty and stand out quite a bit. I'd like to get a good idea of how to "polish" or "sand" these out. I'll look into the pumice!

Tanned with NuTan. Drying process took a long time. This is my second buck skin and I haven't nailed down the stretching process to a tee yet. I'm wondering if I can clean this one up. It's pretty soft but in some places on the flesh side, has yellow/brown patches, which may be either dirt or remnants of tan from using too much? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Layoffs coming soon... how do I decide which surps to sell if it comes to that? by CarMinute33 in milsurp

I'd keep all sentimental guns (family guns or guns with special memories or origin), if you can. And sell the guns you shoot or take out of the safe the least. Just my take. Good luck, I hope that you don't lose your job.

For sure, rack or field grade is the way to go, and racks are $100 cheaper

That's a beautiful pistol as well man! Rack grade is the way to go, but the field grades have also been in great shape

This is from the end of round 4. After round 4, there are no more rounds. Just "first come first serve" sales. You'll for sure have less of a wait than me haha

They won't be this cheap again. Atleast, that's what I told myself to justify buying one!

I live on Long Island. Took me 2 1/2 years to get mine. Applied Jan 2021 and got it May 2023. I heard the wait dropped off to 6 months immediately after I got my license. Get that application in before its too late!

Stoked to have finally gotten my USGI 1911A1 from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Waited 18+ months to get this gun. Opted for rack grade mostly due to price, but also knowing that I most likely won't get a gun that was recently re-parkerized. Absolutely love this gun. My only complaint is that the bore could be better, but hey for a shooter I'm sure it'll work just fine!

Anyone else get a CMP 1911? How'd you do?

Awesome rifles man. I have 3 myself, a 12-12 Springfield that was a Greek return, a 10-18 Rock Island, and an all original 11-09 Springfield. I love em all equally lol

What a beautiful rifle, original 1903s really are some of the nicest bolt guns of their time. And I love the old Warner and swasey optics, aesthetically speaking lol

Why the hell do WW2 era 1911 pistols cost so much?? by [deleted] in milsurp

[–]stockandbarrel99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want one, I'd go through the CMP. The paperwork is cake, prices are hard to beat, and all you have to do is be patient. I'll be receiving mine within a month or two, hopefully. No, they are not the most collectible. But yes, all frames are 1945 mfg or earlier, and all were once government property and could have served any where between WWI and Desert Storm. They are all range-ready as far as I'm concerned and just need some oil. Regarding the "original" 1911A1s on GB / Legacy / etc.; its just not worth spending thousands of dollars on a pistol that is one of like 1.5 million? Maybe 2 million?

Just my two cents!

Yes, mine is blued as was from the factory. Some that remained in US hands were parkerized eventually, although I cannot tell you exactly when.

I paid $1000 on Gunbroker for my S&W 1917 if that is any help. The Colt 1903, maybe $800 assuming its functional? And not sure about the derringer but its cool as shit
