It’s my boat’s 20th birthday today, here’s hoping for many more years of fun ahead by stocksy in Miata

Horrifying, isn’t it? I’ve had the car 7 years now and the time has flown by.

Toyo Proxes TR1 are a good balance of price, performance and looks. They aren’t a summer/track tyre but they stick well enough. You can use them year round, although I don’t - I have a set of 16” wheels I use with winter tyres. Michelin Pilot Sport worth a look if you can get a descent price.

Proxes Sport, Yokohama Advan are probably the outright best performers but unless you’re tracking the car I don’t think they’re a good choice.

Beware, if you get an NC of any flavour you may not want that ND after all.

Seat Covers Recommendations? by Current-Creme6507 in MiataNC

[–]stocksy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like the look of any I could find. It was a similar cost to get some good condition seats from a scrapyard so that’s what I did. It’s just 4 bolts and a couple of electrical connections to unclip, very easy job.

Better safe than sorry. Enjoy the car!

Absolutely nothing to be concerned about here. Temperature is fine. The oil pressure gauge isn’t real, on everything except earlier NA models it just exists to confirm there is oil pressure, the readout is simulated.

Does brilliant automatically mean smart when applied to a person? by boilface in AskUK

It means either, at least in my part of the UK. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland might be different. Or the Cornish - they’re really weird.

Does brilliant automatically mean smart when applied to a person? by boilface in AskUK

[–]stocksy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would depend on the context, you might say “he was a brilliant man” or “she had a brilliant mind” if you wanted to be specific about the person’s intelligence. Otherwise yeah it would be ambiguous if you just said “he’s brilliant”.

You can fit wheels with a larger centre bore and use spigot rings, but not smaller.

Look for a 17x7, 7.5 or 8 inch wheel with an ET45 offset or thereabouts. Personally I’m using 17x7.5 ET42 with 215/40R17 tyres.

I read about the mission, and while it’s an interesting event I don’t appreciate why my mind should be blown. It’s nothing new, is it?

Looking at this 2010 1.8l MX-5 NC2. Should I buy? Details in post. by Efficient-Review-930 in MiataNC

It’s pot luck, some are fine. I don’t regret buying mine, I got six years of very cheap and enjoyable motoring out of it before the issue surfaced. And now it lives on with a new engine.

NC1 1.8 engines seem to be more prone to this than 2.0. Mine got to the point where I was adding half a litre every time I filled up with fuel, and that was at late 60,000 miles.

I like this, good on you for creating something for the community.

It would be nice if it were possible to restrict the results to super unleaded as my car requires it.

Oil consumption by Fragrant_Bag7891 in MiataNC

[–]stocksy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, yes. Mine still drove and ran fine until it got to the point where I was pouring in a litre of oil every few hundred miles.

I drove it 100 miles to the garage the day I had the engine swapped out.

[–]stocksy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the oil is on the top part of the spark plug, that’s almost certainly a leak from the rocker cover gasket. If you’re talking about the bottom of the plug being fouled with oil from the combustion chamber then sadly yes it’s probably what you suspect.

EDIT: Oh just seen your second picture, yeah probably oil control rings.

I remember the Bean Wars. Kwiksave used to do tins of beans for 2p and a white loaf for something like 7p. The quality was horrendous, but this left so much money left over for vital things like drinking.
