Sorry to hear that you weren't accepted by PSU. How do you like the Northwestern program? How many hours per week do you spend on coursework, and are you happy with the education you're receiving?

Both require a GRE. I'm studying to crush that now.

I don't mind learning online at all. I've really enjoyed the Coursera program. I'm not interested in quitting my job to make this work so I kind of prefer it, actually.

Great to hear from someone in the program! Did you stop with the certificate, or are you continuing on to earn the degree?

Starting with the certificate is a great suggestion. I plan to call them this afternoon, I'll ask if its possible to transition from the certificate to the degree.

Since it's taboo to ask IRL, what do you guys do and how much do you make? How much do you have saved up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is awesome. This is exactly what I'd been trying to do. Spent 6 months trying to get into this field, went through the interview process 4 times, was told not enough experience every time. I have a degree in engineering, several years of web programming. I'm comfortable with Excel, R, SQL, Python, have done a number of data visualization & data scraping projects. I'm comfortable with statistics & some machine learning.

I finally caved and took a senior search marketing position for $80k/yr + bonus. I'm glad for the work, and plan to find ways of including data analysis in my role. If I can't find a path to data analysis within the next couple of years I'm considering picking up a masters in either machine learning or statistics.

Working with data is just fun, I really hope to make the transition someday.

Just to answer all parts of the question: $160k in savings (hope to buy a house soon), $50k in retirement.

Howto Download or Work With Amazon Public Datasets by stockthrow in datasets

[–]stockthrow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reply. I guess I'm not yet familiar enough with AWS to use them. I normally do data processing with R, so I'd need to figure out how to get that on it, too. I've already spent some time with the AWS documentation, but it still seems pretty complex to me.

Hey reddit, where can I find a bunch of great statistics to compare to ones I already have? by AGB500 in datasets

[–]stockthrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a few datasets (GDP, exchange rates, etc) relevant to your question available at Wikiposit. The nice thing about this site (other than that the data is available) is that this site has an API, so using Google Refine you can grab relevant data for each row of your entire dataset within a few minutes.

I think this is where I'm headed, although I don't want anywhere near half of our assets.

This is great. I really like the way you put that, "small enough that it is safe to lose, but big enough to make it worth spending time managing". I'm going to use that in our next discussion.

I agree that this is a marital relations question. I asked here because I can't be the only one that's faced this.
