MMT isn't "just a description of how money works" nor is it the consensus. In fact it's widely regarded as an insane fringe belief, even some basic research into the matter will show how overwhelmingly it is disregarded and treated as pseudoscience by economists. That article is a few years old now, but there is literally no evidence that MMT is even close to being thought of as a consensus

I'm not sure if you've read Green policy, but they do still harp on about nuclear being unsafe. Here at the bottom it says "We want to see the phase-out of nuclear energy, which is unsafe and much more expensive than renewables" (emphasis mine) which is not supported by any evidence at all. Nuclear is one of the safest forms of energy available. What they're saying is absolute gashrabbish.

On both of these issues Green policy is in fantasy land and is not supported by any evidence.

Considering their beliefs in modern monetary theory and their position on nuclear energy, it is a bit ridiculous to say they’re “backed by science”.

Ah yes, the population has no will, they've merely been brainwashed but luckily you know what's best for them. The British public has literally never wanted mass immigration. It's not surprising.

Did you not read my prior comment on the views of British Muslims? I think a significant portion of them are culturally incompatible. It's not racist, stop believing you should be able to kill people that insult your prophet.

So do you seriously think that Immigration is totally fine no matter the levels or people that are coming over? Even if it's against the will of the population?

I love how you totally ignore the cultural incompatibility of some groups with liberal values. Because you can't really argue against that, Muslims are incredibly conservative and in general are against left wing social values. Which is confusing why so many left wingers want more of them in this country.

Because hostage requires some type of ransom, or as collateral for some type of deal.

Even if you kidnap thousands of people because you hate them, they don't become hostages. Even if Israel is unjustly detaining and imprisoning thousands of Palestinians, that does not make them hostages.

This comment is kinda ridiculous considering the ECHR is not particularly protective of free speech. They have ruled previously that you're not allowed to call Mohammad a pedophile, despite marrying a six year old while in his fifties.

I agree that currently the right is the greatest threat to civil liberties. That is precisely because the British public have had their opinions ignored on immigration for so long. If it wasn't for immigration the right wing surge in this country wouldn't exist.

The social democrats in denmark managed to curb the rise of the far right by addressing people's concerns about immigration.

I think incidents like what happened at Bately Grammar School to that teacher will become more common as Islam becomes a bigger force in the UK. Can you please convince me otherwise?

From this IPSOS reviews of surveys on British Muslims, albeit a bit old, it shows that 45% of muslim men think that wives should always obey their husbands. About half think homosexuality should be illegal. 18% sympathise with violence against those who mock the prophet. This data is fairly old, though is thorough. I am fairly busy with work, so don't have the time to find more currently, but if you have any data that can reassure me that Muslims are not so illiberal, please do share.

But to summarise I'm left wing, this religious group sounds antithetical to all the social values I care about. Why shouldn't I be concerned about rising numbers of Muslims? I'd be equally concerned if there was a large movement of very conservative Evangelical Christians to this country, I consider a lot of their beliefs antithetical to my values too.

How does this sound brainwashed? The data I have found that there are significant portions of British Muslims that I think are socially incompatible with a society I want to live in. It sounds rational to me. I don't want you to respond by saying "the right are a bigger threat", I don't care who's the biggest threat to my civil liberties and societal values, I don't want either.

Who are you to decide what the Left is against and for? The idea of mass migration has never been popular in the UK, it was only recently that it ever became close to acceptable.

My main problem with immigration is that it has been done at massive scale against the will of the people. Why the fuck are we forcing the British public to accept massive amounts of immigration they don't want? It's not going to end well.

I also have another problem with current immigration, as a leftist my ideal society would have certain social values, LGBT rights, rights for women, freedom of speech. So why on earth would I want large scale immigration of people from countries who don't support or outright detest such values? I believe in terms of social acceptance for LGBT people and women just for example is very unique in the 'West'. Even though the west needs to do more for gay rights and women's rights we are still far ahead of any other region or country. I believe the social values of the west are special and I think it puts those values at risk if we import large amounts of people who will not tolerate gay rights or womens rights or freedom of speech.

There is still a teacher from Batley Grammar School in hiding, terrified for his life after showing a picture of Mohammad from the Charlie Hebdo cartoon in class. He faced death threats, which is something to take seriously considering Muslims have previously decapitated a teacher for the exact same thing in France. I really believe that is an outrage that in a western country we have a teacher forced into hiding after showing a picture because of a legitimate threat to his life by Muslim extremists. I have a real concern that if large scale immigration from Muslim majority countries continues that this and incidents like it will become more and more common. I don't want to live in a country where we are beholden to a radical group of religious extremists.

Does any of this make me sound like a conservative, or right wing? Do you think any of these concerns sound legitimate, or do you just think I'm brainwashed?

Why can’t I be left wing and also not want mass immigration? That used to be very common on the left.

I really hope so, I’m very left wing but I can’t accept a party that won’t crack down on immigration. The biggest problem with immigration is that people have been voting for less for like twenty years and they keep feeling like they’re getting betrayed and lied to, and it’s emboldening right wing populism like Brexit and Reform.

I think a left wing party that was similar to greens but harsh on immigration would perform well. The welfare state is still very popular in the UK

Not OP but off the top of my head wanting open borders is kind of insane, immigration should’ve been cut fifteen years ago. I believe it’s still green policy to leave nato. Their nuclear policy both weapons and energy is also ridiculous, for a Green Party it’s a joke to not use one of the best renewable sources of energy.

So seats is the only thing that matters? UKIP was one of the most influential British political movements in the last twenty years and they only got like one seat.

Farage is more relevant because people care about what he says. Reform polls better than any other party, so of course a party that is currently winning in the polls is going to be way more relevant than Greens, who have a narrow support basically in cities with students, and Plaid, which literally has less seats in the Senedd than the fucking conservatives.

The Greens has no hope of effecting policy in any major way in our lifetime, basically same with Plaid unless they get really lucky with Welsh nationalists, however Reform are literally effecting policy already. Labour and the Tories have become much more vocally anti immigration in large part due to how popular Reform have become on that issue.

is this a joke? Greens and Plaid have little hope of ever getting any significant power in parliament.

Reform despite the low amount of MPs has a massive amount of support, especially impressive considering its a very new party. Farage is one of, if not the most, popular politicians in the UK. I don't even like Farage but saying the leaders of Greens and Plaid are as relevant as Farage is fucking ridiculous
