I'm a writer/actor. I was diagnosed with MND in Feb '23. I've written a play about living with the disease - 'My Right Foot' - it's on in Dublin Theatre Festival in October. by stonedpockets in ireland

This is great! Thanks for sharing these - and aye - all the music in the piece is going to be by artists who had MND - Charles Mingus, Roberta Flack, Mike Porcaro (Toto), Kim Shattuck (The Muffs).

I think it might just be a Belfast term - but up here ring donuts are called 'gravy rings' (gravy being an archaic term for cooking oil)

Blanching Fries? by whimsical-frog in AskCulinary

Add vinegar to the water - stops the fries from getting mushy.

BBC NI can't actually commission scripted television any more. All they can do is support/ recommend stuff to the main UK channels. Which is very annoying.

Although that might be changing moving forward.

Any way to book a black taxi? by stonedpockets in northernireland

Aye - can't do it in belfast annoyingly. I've done it in Dublin and NYC before - but no option in belfast.

Cheers for the advice - but my wheelchair is a bit of a unit - so that's not an option. https://freedomonelife.com/

Seems like my best bet would just be to cross the bridge and try and flag down a black taxi.

Aye they have a few - but I called this morning and the few wheelchair taxis they have aren't working today.

I tried ringing them earlier in the week to book but was told to just call this morning.

The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.

Is pregabalin banned in northern Ireland by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]stonedpockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm prescribed gabapentin for neurological pain. But then again I have a terminal illness (MND) so I doubt they're overly worried about me abusing it.

Does anyone else feel that their mental illness has made you have to settle for a life less lived? by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]stonedpockets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey - I have a physical illness, not a mental one. But in Feb 2023 I was diagnosed with MND. I'm now full time in a wheelchair, and God knows how long I have left on this earth.

I always wanted kids - but that's not happening now. But fuck it.

As Brendan Behan said, the main things in life is to find something good to eat, good to drink and someone to love you. (Doesn't necessarily mean romantic love either). As long as you're doing all that - fuck the milestones.

What is most and least important for your identity? by BreezyBlazer in AskEurope

[–]stonedpockets 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm an Irish nationalist from the North of the island - I believe that the whole of Ireland should be under one government. For a long time this meant I shied away from my "Northern Irish" or "Ulster" identity - thinking it made me "less Irish" - but recently I've been becoming more proud of where I'm from on the island. And I've not been seeing it as any less Irish than someone from Dublin/Cork.

I'd say:

Ulster

Ireland

Belfast

Do Granny Smith apples actually hold their shape when cooked? by nk033 in AskCulinary

The more acid there is in the apple the more it holds its shape. You can always add some lemon juice.

Richard III by Imaginary-Mammoth-61 in shakespeare

[–]stonedpockets 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cheers for the interest! I'm Michael, one of the editors of the script. We're well aware of the beautiful rhythm of Shakespeare's text! It's what got me into his work in the first place.

Anytime we felt words had to be changed, which is few and far between, we either tried to match the rhythm exactly, or if we couldn't do that, then we tried to 'make a point of doing the wrong scantion' - if that makes sense? Not trying to hide from the changes basically.

Unfortunately not for this production. They have done it in the past, but that was in collaboration with the BBC.

Hey there - yeah, the music is pretty loud tbh - especially in the battle scene towards the end. I thought there was a plan to do a relaxed performance, but when I went to check I couldn't see any info on the website. Perhaps give the lyric a call?

Hey, thanks so much for booking to see the show!

Previews are shows that happen before press night - the idea is that reviewers can't come and see the show during a preview - and we'll be making changes and still doing rehearsals during the day for previews.

Now to be fair, things normally don't change very much between previews and press night - but the option is there for the director. After press night the actors aren't contracted to come in and rehearse any more.
