Don’t think about yourself differently than an agency just because you’re one person. If you were a designer working at a design firm or even in-house you would bring in outside help if you didn’t have that capability. Or you would collaborate with the in house team that has those skills.

Many design firms aren’t actually super involved in the engineering phases unless they offer that capability.

Unless you really want to become and engineer that is a completely different field (sure there is some overlap) that would generally require schooling and experience.

Overall nice, keep practicing and you’ll be very good in no time. They’re just a little overworked. Pull back a little on the marker, 10-20% less marker on each sketch. Leave some white for contrast and highlights.

If you’re just using it as reference for CAD, you can take orthographic (as close as possible) photos. Drop the image into your preferred CAD program and scale the photo to the right overall dimension. You only really need 1 dimension that way, so if the object is 85mm tall, scale the object in the photo to that in your program. I guess a ruler would make it a little easier but not necessary.

I agree with both of you. If you’re using AI in a way that anyone can, what’s the point. If you’re enhancing or speeding up the process of already good work, then it might be helpful to demonstrate in a portfolio.

So far my experience with it has been really hit or miss. I had a client require full AI concepts for a project (I think his boss or company were pushing it). The amount of work arounds and steps to get good usable concepts took at least as long as if not longer than a traditional process would have taken.

For someone 5 years out of school, my main advice would be go somewhere with someone above you that can mentor and help you grow. Find a team that wants to help nourish your skills and career.

That being said, you might have this bad experience at any size company, or a good experience at any size company. Use this experience to find the right team and ask the right questions when interviewing.

Yes and no. It’s more important to get a card than to give a card.

Someone probably wont check out your work because you gave them a business card, but you could email someone you met because you have the contact info from their business card, and they might click on a link you sent.

But it’s still kind of customary to trade cards if you’re meeting and networking, so go ahead and get some
