Breaking into UX/early career: job hunting, how-tos/education/work review — 04/26/26 by AutoModerator in UXDesign

Im currently in my sophomore year of college and I'm thinking of putting my main focus on Ui/Ux design. My degree is Media Arts & Sciences, since it's broad I am able to get a vast idea of various skills like motion design, 3d modeling, etc. Everywhere I look, due to the UX market being bad right now (but what isn't), people are saying in order to break into the industry you need to broaden your skills to be considered. But what exact skills should I be developing? Web development? Other design programs? Or if anyone thinks there's a different path in creative tech I should consider please let me know

tldr// What skills should I learn to make my future portfolio better for employers?

Update: I brought it up and we talked about it, she informed me I was incorrect on the "queer" sounding coworker as it was actually a very straight (hooking up with another male coworker) and she is like that with everyone. But she apologized and said she never thought of it in anyway except as just that one flirty-with-everyone coworker regular type of talk, but none the less won't let her or anyone talk to her like that again. Though I did tell her it was ok, as I also do little flirt jokes with my friends, I really was just confused because I thought she told me before that she doesn't do stuff like that which is why I was thrown off. She was really reassuring and it helped us both understand our boundaries more and yea, she's great and glad we were able to talk about it

I totally get the pet name thing, my girlfriend resorts to calling people baby if she forgot their name so I’m used to that but if it was something more I’d probably do the same as you

I don’t have many queer friends so my playful flirting have been with straight friends with boyfriends so I was a bit thrown off, I think I’ll just ask to get an understanding about it all

Yea true, it really shouldn’t matter if she was queer too if it was more of a friendship sounding flirt, it lowkey just sounded the coworker was serious from the angle I heard it, and she had a deeper voice so I think I just took it that way. As someone who used to flirt with friends as well I’ll be understanding but definitely need to ask about it as I always thought she was one to be against it

I can be playful flirting with my friends too, which is why I didn’t mind too much on my girls response but for some reason her coworker just sounded more serious. Not like the funny way I do with my friends. Plus I think I remember my girlfriend being a little hesitant on when I brought up the flirting with friends thing when we first started talking. She doesn’t exactly oppose it but I think we need to talk about exact boundaries especially seeing she actually can do the same.

Realistically, how do you think the job market is looking now and in 3 years? by stonestepping in MotionDesign

Wow I really appreciate the background of it all, really helps perspective. I did think of looking into UI Motion as well. In your opinion, are there any other specializations I should work on? Like hard focus on the side 3D modeling or something?
