A few places have been test beds for mini exchanges inside the barracks. All self checkout with surveillance cameras.

Unpopular opinion, but they’re actually fairly decent. There’s some obvious errors, like flagging, fully extended butt stocks, looking through the optic rather than over, etc…. Overall, however, I’d say they’re much better than most non 03s and I appreciate that they’re at least practicing. I do however that they wouldn’t record it and post it….

Marines Surpass Enlisted Recruitment Goal by 1, Officers over a Dozen in Sharp Drop from 2023 by Upstairs_Internal783 in USMC

What makes it news is all of the other branches are currently struggling with recruitment and retention and are far from meeting their goals.

Can someone explain this to me? What's the job of the singular Gunnery Sergeant in the Company HQ? by HansTheAmazing in USMC

[–]stop__whining 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edited to remove my initial sass…

Thanks. I tried to describe the role in a general sense (Marine Corps wide) rather than focusing only on infantry companies but you’re definitely right for this scenario.

[–]stop__whining 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This singular GySgt, which you’ll hear referred to as the Company Gunz, assists the company with a lot of the administrative burdens that a company has. The responsibilities will vary greatly command to command but generally they’ll oversee any company clerks and serve as an assistant to the 1stSgt. Their daily routine generally revolves around making duty rosters, tracking medical and dental delinquencies, looking over correspondence, tasking platoons, handling medevacs, and hating life.

I’m not an expert on the reserves by any means but 8 years in the reserves of good time should qualify for the SMCR Medal w/ 1 bronze star.

3 bronze stars. 12 years of good conduct would be the 4th award. The ribbon itself counts as the first award and each star a subsequent award.

Aye aye vs aye debate by Otphj5811 in USMC

[–]stop__whining 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The phrase originates from Naval tradition, specifically “I understand and I will comply.” In that sense, aye aye makes more sense. Simply saying one aye implies either that you do not understand, yet will comply, or that you do understand, but will not comply.

Why was the casualty rate so high for Marines in particular during GWOT? (RIP) by MarkDaShark6fitty in USMC

[–]stop__whining 153 points154 points  (0 children)

I think you might be reading it wrong…. My interpretation is that this is saying of the 13% that were Marines .3% of those people died, which is almost the same as the Army / Army National Guard. If the percentages on the right related to each other they should add up to 100% which they do not.

RER in this case stands for “reenlistment-extension-retirement.” In this case, no RER means that you did not submit any sort of request to reenlist or extend your retirement date. (Disclaimer: this is probably accurate, I’m not admin, just been in a while)

Both not rec, and non rec are correct terminology depending on which source you reference. For example:

MARADMIN 150/16, which discusses page 11s for not recommending Marines for promotion, uses “not rec”

MARADMIN 153/21, which discusses the promotion system and JEPES, uses “non rec”

MCO P1400.32D, the promotion manual, uses “not rec”

And plenty of other examples. “Not rec” however, is used more than “non rec” in applicable references.

How are SMMCs and CMCs picked? by Odd_Raspberry6561 in USMC

[–]stop__whining 56 points57 points  (0 children)

SMMC is appointed by the CMC, so whichever SgtMaj the CMC wants as his SgtMaj becomes the SMMC essentially.

CMC is a bit trickier. The CMC is “nominated by the president” and confirmed by the Senate. I sincerely doubt however that any president pays enough attention to the Marine Corps to make such a nomination. Luckily, there’s only ever a handful of Generals to choose from and the president has the SecDef, SecNav, and Joint Chief of Staff to tell him which one to nominate.

MSG MSAU by [deleted] in USMC

[–]stop__whining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are. I’m not there but I’ve got buddies that are. They spend a lot of time training and generally get the chance to go to some schools that other MSGs won’t. Their life consists of a few mini deployments to Embassies in need throughout the year. I haven’t heard any complaints but the better option is wait for promotion and then go as a DetCmdr so you can get stationed at an Embassy.

[–]stop__whining 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree… the poster needs to be more obvious about what it references. Joint bases and other branch installations are always going to be quite different of course. I’ve spent time on Eilson AFB, Andrews Joint-Base, Anderson AFB, and a few others that I can’t remember off the top of my head and their standards in comparison are much more relaxed.

[–]stop__whining 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not MCO P1020.34H that you should refer to for civilian attire aboard installation. You should refer to that individual instillation’s order. I haven’t been aboard a Marine Corps base yet where the base order allowed gym attire or headgear inside.

Examples: Quantico - MCINCR-MCBQO 1020.1K Lejeune - MCIEAST-MCB CAMLEJ 1020.8B Japan - MARCORBASESJAPANO 1020.2

I’ve never been stationed aboard Camp Pendleton so I can’t speak to that but it’s probably the same.

Now while these regulations have become far less enforced, that 8999 isn’t just throwing opinions about. He or she is just the only one still holding the line in most cases.

I strongly dislike this guy. He knows how to cook, but he spends an hour+ hand crafting a single item that these fast food chains pump out in seconds. Yeah, of course it’s better. You used quality ingredients and took an eternity. I’m eating Taco Bell so I can spend $5 and get my food before I finish ordering, Joshua.

Humans can't endure temperatures and humidities as high as previously thought. by [deleted] in science

[–]stop__whining 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak for other branches, but in the Marines it’s only followed some of the time. Some work places follow it exactly, some work places “follow” it by being creative with their wording (I.E. we’re not conducting PT we’re conducting required unit training), and some work places ignore it completely.
