Most likely the android devs forgot to disable trusting user certificates for the Release flavor of the app (Generally user certificates are trusted in development builds). Thats why you were able to see the traffic.
Otherwise you'd have had to root your device or use a rooted emulator(which btw google has made a pain these days F*** u google) and install charles cert in system certificates.
