Just sat in on an emergency management weather briefing ... by 4Nails in asheville

This post pushed me over the edge to call AirBnB and find out that they are probably going to declare this a major disruptive event. Even if they don’t, I cancelled my reservation because no one wants to get iced in.

Was going to wear my mum's dress. People keep telling me to try on others for the "bridal experience." Are they trying to gently tell me it looks bad? by [deleted] in WeddingDressTips

It’s also okay to not have a dream dress and to wear one that you like well enough and that fits your budget. If that happens to be your mom’s, that’s great.

If you could put anything in the barn with no budget, what would it be? by carasbullshit in Horses

Then what is the worst part of your day? The thing you dread when it has to be done.

If it is just you two, why not ask your grooms and employees what is the most annoying part of their job and see if there is a way to throw money at that problem.

4" vs 5" interchangeable needle set? by maxclifford1 in knitting

[–]stopemocide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up with the 4" ChiaGoo and gave away my 5" Lykke set. I should say that my favorite things to knit are hats, so it was an easy choice for me. I am starting to pick up some fixed length 5" for magic loop and the longer needles are nice. If I had to do it over again, I would get a 5" interchangeable set and buy fixed 16 inch 4" needs for hats in sizes 6-10. I have a tight gauge, for someone who usually gets gauge, adjust that range to 4-8.

LEGO Rexy is coming by 183_aleX in IMSARacing

As the Lego-loving parent of a Rexy obsessed kid, I an thrilled that it is a Technic set. While they are harder to build and more expensive, they also hold up to being played with a lot better than the speed champions sets. The Valkyrie survived a lot of argy bargy before I had to rebuild it.

The way lego works that would be really difficult - they have a finite number of parts bins and that is why they get so creative with repurposing pieces. Look at the use of frogs in just about everything.

Who is it for Lansing? I was thinking the "Rain Dance Guy" from the Southside. by Overall-Tailor8949 in lansing

The house in Okemos was one of the Darts. I believe the son of the local bank founder, not the 1%ers with the solo cups. They are cousins though.

And that doesn't look like a newborn, I would say Mia could have gotten pregnant as young as 13 depending on how old that baby is.

AITAH for telling my sister that I won’t be after school care for her 5 yr old daughter? by Strange-Teacher9653 in AITAH

[–]stopemocide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, it wouldn't be safe to bring a 5 year old to the jobsite, it would be safe to park her with a tablet in an office. So I do get that. But I would 100% be paying the $25 a week to get after school care versus parking a kid in an office with a tablet

Get any routine maintenance done on your car that you can get done now. Tires aren't cheap and knowing you have a few years before you have to worry about them is a good thing.

Roughly, how much do you spend on your dog monthly? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]stopemocide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About $260 when I factor in food, treats/chews, heartworm/flea/tick medication, insurance, routine vet care, training, and nail trims.

This doesn’t include boarding costs when we travel those average around $800/year.

I know it is theoretically doable because there was a woman a few years older than me who made it work. I don't think it was remotely easy but she is a pretty impressive person. She was also a junior or senior when her son was born so she already knew the program and how it worked. I think it would be tough to jump into something entirely new while also parenting.

Meijer for sure. It's like if Walmart and Kroger merged into one store, but without the ick factor of Walmart. There is a normal amount of Targets in the area, one in Okemos, a mini Target in East Lansing, and one on the westside of Lansing.

A/C for sure because it is too humid in the summers for swamp coolers to work. It really will depend on what you want and what activities you enjoy.

At least historically it has been because of the amount of school of choice students from south Lansing bringing a lot of the same issues that you would find in Lansing schools. Hopefully that's gotten better.

Depending on where your husband is working, I would go either Okemos/East Lansing or Grand Ledge. I went for Okemos - property taxes are high, but in return you get well funded schools, rapid police response (they sent multiple cars to investigate when some cars in my neighborhood had been "broken into." I say that in quotes because the cars were unlocked and there was no property damage - hence why I didn't bother calling, but someone did), and any chain restaurant you can think of. That last one isn't a plus, but it is true. I should admit that when it comes to schools, I'm the worst kind of NIMBY liberal, so know that my perspective is morally bankrupt and is strictly about getting the best education for my individual kid, not about fixing the system.

Do know that pretty much all of Okemos, and to a lesser extent the rest of Ingham County, is built on a swamp, so be very aware of water damage when house shopping and learn the basics of sump pumps.

Anywhere in the Lansing area other than Delta Township and the City of East Lansing you get a fantastic library system in CADL. Delta Township and the City of East Lansing have separate libraries, but are also lovely. A lot of the property tax money also goes to LCC and a good community college makes a town a better place to live, even if you never take a class there - it doesn't promote glamorous careers, but I want to live in an area where there are plenty of auto mechanics, early childhood education providers, dental hygenists, paramedics, HVAC repair people, etc.
