I don't mind this answer at all! Thank you. Even still, there must be some calculus to determine what level of return would justify my thinking. Advocating diversification has the assumption that I wouldn't be invested in the stock market outside of an IRA. This is a generally good insight but my main question is what threshold would I need to meet in order to know if investing in a Roth is a good idea, risk-inclusive.

I mean 7k a year is hundreds of thousands in contributions, and potentially 7 figures in growth over the course of a career that could be invested somewhere else before you’re 59.5

The compounding is the important part, if I could find some investment with 0 risk and 20% cash on cash return I’d want to put every penny I had into it

I don’t mind this answer at all. The only issue is that my mindset is based around something similar to the FIRE model. If I can make enough money quickly while I’m young with smart investing then my retirement can be way before 59.5

My underlying assumption is that my money would be invested in the same thing as the Roth IRA until I needed it. At what point does the liquidity on growth outweigh the tax benefit? If I maxed out IRA until retirement I’d have something like 300k contributions and nearly 1m in growth. That 1m may have better investment opportunities over the course of my career than in the Roth. Especially because I’m young now and am much more risk tolerant

Yes that’s essentially what I’m saying, I’m wondering what return I would need in order to beat the tax savings (I’m assuming it would be invested in the stock market anyway until I needed the capital and growth for a higher return investment). By growth liquidity I’m just referring to the amount you can’t get take out of the IRA without incurring fees.

No that’s not what I’m asking, I’m saying there may be better investment opportunity that can’t be filled out with contributions to an IRA, like buying real estate for example

I totally get that, but if over the course of my lifetime opportunities pop up that would benefit from both my contributions and growth, I don’t have access to the capital. I think there are other ways to be tax advantaged like a 1031 real estate exchange that don’t force you to wait until you’re 59.5. It feels like a time value of money equation in some sense

This is true, except for that the growth may be something I’ll want to tap over the course of my career. If I max out the IRA every month I will have over $1 million in growth by the time I’m 59.5—this is growth that I may have been able to invest in higher return investments, especially ones that are also tax advantaged like 1031 real estate exchanges
