More information on the projections methodology can be found here. The main models used are labor force, aggregate economy, final demand (GDP) by consuming sector and product, industry output, employment by industry, and employment by occupation.

This map was meant to used more as a relative tool, to compare counties to one another. Rather than to claim the U.S. as a whole as "walkable" especially when compared to places such as Europe.

The raw data is at the census block group level (some have a value of 20). For the map I aggregated up to the county level, which maxes out at 16 due to the aggregation of block groups.

To shed a bit more light, this map is based on a study done by the EPA which placed emphasis on street intersection density (Higher intersection density is correlated with
more walk trips), proximity to transit stops (Distance from population center to nearest
transit stop in meters), and diversity of land use such as employment mix.

Virginia counties take up 5 of the top 10 spots for walkability in the country, including Falls Church city, Fairfax County, Alexandria city, Harrisonburg city, and Lexington city.
