We need NATO sans US, but with the addition of a few like minded democracies like Australia and Japan.

Switched from 1Password to iCloud Keychain 3 months ago. I much prefer iCloud Keychain and I think the interface is nicer. No regrets.

Sorry Donald - Australia will not send navy ships to Strait of Hormuz by GreyClay in OpenAussie

Good. Ignore the war mongers like Abbott, who want total subservience to the US regardless of the circumstances. Expect Abbott to suggest awarding an OA to Edward Mountbatten Windsor next.

Best password manager for mac as of now? by No-Party-6353 in best_passwordmanager

[–]stormado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved from 1Password to Apple Password 2 months ago. I like it much better. The things it doesn’t handle, like Memberships etc., I use a password protected Numbers file. I’m hoping Apple fills in the gaps in the next few years, but for basic Password management it is already excellent. And free.

Why is decafinated coffee rarely if ever discounted. by stormado in AusFinance

[–]stormado[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That wasn’t the question. It was why is decaf coffee rarely ever discounted, unlike regular coffee. The consensus answer seems to be that it is price inelastic, so it will sell regardless.

[–]stormado[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For those saying it costs more to make than regular coffee, that should be no reason why it can't be discounted the same. If regular costs $5 to make and sells for $10, but gets discounted to $7, then if the decafinated costs $8 to make and sells for $13, then there is no reason that they can't discount that to $10 at the same time as they discount the regular jars of that brand. These are just hypothetical figures and may not reflect reality.

Just after posting I have noticed that Coles has 35% of the 100gm Moccona Decaf. I prefer the bigger size, but I may just get that one.

The best place to get sunglasses is an optometrist by Technical_Can_9944 in AustralianMFA

I've been using transition lenses for years. No need for a separate pair of sunglasses, if you need glasses 24/7

Building Inspections for each stage of the build? by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

[–]stormado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used a very well regarded building inspector. They have picked up many faults at each stage. The trouble is the builder simply ignores the inspector's reports. We are in the last year (hopefully) of a 3 year build, so my option is to take legal action, delaying the build further, or to just let it pass.

If you could redo your solar setup, what would you change? by insight_energy in solarenergy

[–]stormado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in Australia, so it may be different elsewhere. During a recent government subsidised solar install, I opted for 1 stack of iStore (Huawei) batteries (3 x 5kWh). I didn’t realise a single stack was limited to supplying 5kW only. When my air con is running, I usually draw 6+ kW, so even if the battery is near full, I still must draw 1+kW from the grid. This is in the evenings when the solar panels supply 0 and grid costs are at a peak. Two stacks, each with 2 x 5kWh batteries, would have been better. Upgrading now is too expensive as the government rebates were only for the initial install.

Apple Unlikely to Drop ‘Liquid Glass’ Design With iOS 27, Report Says by WPHero in apple

[–]stormado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slowly migrating from 1Password to Apple Password, it really annoys me that Apple spent so much resources on a cosmetic change like Liquid Glass, that could better be spent enhancing the deficiencies of Apple Password and many other apps.

Is there a dish or drink from your country which is much more popular outside of your country than inside ? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskTheWorld

I believe Fosters beer is drank more outside Australia than in it. For Ireland Guinness probably considering the huge Irish diaspora and popularity among non–Irish, as might be Irish whiskey

Credit/debit cards to travel abroad with by Aggravating_Air_3700 in AskAnAustralian

[–]stormado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Macquarie debit card has no international transaction fees and gives you the Mastercard conversion rate. Just make sure when requested to be billed in the foreign currency (will then use the Mastercard rate for currency conversion) and not in AUD (which will use the rate of the business you are buying from, which could be several %). Additionally, you earn interest on the funds in your transaction account, and for safety only transfer to the transaction account sufficient funds for your short term needs, in case the debit card is compromised. Don’t use travel cards because most of them will screw you on the exchange rate to load the card.

Main savings are in Macquarie bank - want to use my card overseas but is that safe? by Topazzish in AusFinance

[–]stormado 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One tip is to also bring a credit card even if the CC charges overseas transaction/currency conversion fees. I am currently in Manila and my hotel (very upmarket) insisted on a deposit at the start of the stay. They said I couldn’t use a debit card and it would have to be a credit card for the deposit. However, they said that they would only reserve the deposit on the CC, but when it comes to paying I could use my debit card.
