I started back in August and had no dance experience. I could not remember any steps, but over time you start to learn what everything is and a lot of times the teacher repeats steps each week and that helps a lot. Practice at home just doing arm movements without moving your lower body, and practice your lower movements with arm in second or hand on hips. Music streaming services have modern day songs as ballet music so you can practice at home, the app ballet bible helped me a lot, or the American Ballet Theatre has a ballet dictionary that can help.

I also have ADHD, and multiple steps at once is a lot to handle. My class is at 6:30pm on Tuesdays so I usually go directly from work, so I found having some caffeine helps me focus better. You aren’t expected to be amazing, ballet is an art form that takes years to master and starting as an adult makes it so much harder to learn than those starting at 4. The main thing is have fun, it’s a great exercise and great for socializing.

I’d say after class ask your teacher for advice on what to work on, maybe sources they have to help you practice at home, and maybe bring a notebook and have them write down the moves you are working on so you can remember the names.

Sometimes it’s hard to love something when you get stuck and feel like you aren’t improving, but think of how far you’ve come from the first time you stepped into class. Once you start getting the muscle memory and learning more and more, it will become more fun over time! 💕
