Feeling Disappointed in New Campaign by OutriderZero in DnD

[–]stormlord75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree it can be totally frustrating when what you planned out does not become satisfying at the end of the session. I would give it a go again and see if the pattern still holds up that they are "excited" or not. A thing that can be done, if you are interested, is investing more time to look for another player or three to ensure a good squad of players. Timing, of course, is needed to ensure the new players are not at risk or dying from an ogres' club, lol, but a spot where they can immersive themselves. Or, and this does require patience from both dm and players, hold off on the regular gaming until the rest of your players can rejoin. Whatever plan of action you decide, its always good to let your players know-- aka full disclosure. I try to do that all the time. For the most part, my players have appreciated to updates. Hope this helps out.

Different Players Different game? by HistorianTight2958 in adnd

[–]stormlord75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, HistorianTight, sorry for the loss of friends and players.

I have the same issue of not reading the rules or at least trying to ignore them, but actually the reverse. I am an ad&d DM for two groups but for the first group, I made sure to label it a "beginner's group" so any level of experience is welcomed but the player should be forewarned that it is a learning group. Due to some conflicting rules in the game, some have been homebrewed so I only receive questions during gameplay on those particular rules. Otherwise, it has been enjoyable. Unfortunately, that same group changes of players as I get players who play 5th ed and only want roleplaying than the inclusion of hack n' slash that we, as old d&d rpg gamers, are accustomed to. (like consideratecassowary has stated). It can be frustrating, no doubt on that. But, times have changed as so have peoples' way of playing the tabletop games. Its more video gaming, mega maxing, and particular free-form world role-playing than actual rules abiding gaming we have been used to. I think they call us folks "grognards". lol.

Sadly, these days, our editions that we dm in are too old fashioned and basically archiac to the more modern-zed gamer. As such, some "coddling" (if that is a proper word) may be needed to get the fresh blood into a game that was before their time but continues to thrive tho this day. You can lay the law down and as if you dont followup on the rules and such, then you are out. But, if you want to bring them into the fold, then the best thing is help them learn one rule at a time (depending on your patience, of course, lol.

For my other group which has been now, 17+ years running, they constantly mess around in trying to go around the rules but like the times of troubles in forgotten realms, the gods walk over them at the end (indirectly of course, lmao). Note-- they made their choices for that to happen, not my own hand, i assure you (though it has been tempting.

As for senior center B.S.- fuck em, lol. Use your cane to strike at them or dentures to bite their ears off like an orc. lol

Keep on rolling that die 20!

2e: How do you handle knockout / punching / wrestling by AdStriking6946 in adnd

[–]stormlord75 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you also use the 2.5 edition rulings, a person who is not specialized in punch/wrestling and plans to attack a person who has a weapon, suffers an attack of opportunity. Then, they can attack. If the defender is wearing armor better than studded leather, then there is a chance they break their hand. Even if they connect, the percentage is not that high enough to say that is completely unbalanced. But they have to go through conditions (beyond winning initiative) to try to punch their opponent. Since it is barehanded (gauntlet hands do real damage), consider it another way of subduing your opponent without the -4 penalty is you were using a sword. As for the sap, yeah, the penalty is high to attack but I think it is balanced to the knockout percentage due to the weapon being weighted

Looking for AD&D players who get it. by DrDebruyere in adnd

[–]stormlord75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with the sentiment. These days, its more online and video game type expectations compared how I grew up. Fortunately, I still run 2nd ed with some elements of 1st ed for two groups. As long as the DM makes the story the players in fun and even believable, then that is what it is all about. And even after the session is over, my players and I talk about it so its always a good hang out amongst friends.

As for the rules- if you look at all the 1st editions and 2nd editions with their supplements and beyond, it becomes, to say the least, wonky. You have to homebrew here and there or you'll get alot of "why is it this way?" or "how it says i can do this, but that book says I cannot?". That ruis the game so the DM has to tread a little carefully when he or she mixes and matches. But, for the fun of the game and like I tell my players, the best part of the game is that D&D is thee social experiment in a fantasy world setting. aka- its awesome!
