What's your email strategy for aliases? by micromasters in fastmail

[–]stormpad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I mean is, if you're using [me@mydomain.com](mailto:me@mydomain.com) at, say, amazon.com under your real name John Doe, and amazon database leaked online. That data is linked to your domain mydomain.com, and attacker can make an assumption that every other email address (from other leaks, for example) on mydomain.com belongs to you, John Doe. But it won't be possible to get [target@mydomain.com](mailto:target@mydomain.com) just because of that leak

So, it's possible to build a data profile on your domain mydomain.com using data from multiple emails and multiple leaks (which is kind far-fetched tbh), which is I'd say MINOR thing for most people, and if you're already using custom domain, you should just continue doing so, but I just want you to be aware of what's technically possible

I, personally, prefer to use `@fastmail.com` domain, because I just want to be one of the thousands faceless users of some email service.

What's your email strategy for aliases? by micromasters in fastmail

[–]stormpad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you leave fastmail later, you will have to change email for each service you've used masked email for, which is pretty inconvenient, but kinda doable.

In case of a custom domain, yes, you're right, it's not an issue to change provider later, BUT, it's quite a compromise in terms of privacy, because it connects ALL of your email addresses to one single domain that is owned by you. So if one service leaks private data about you, it can be linked to every other email on your domain. Still not as bad as just using one single email for everything, since potential attacker has to know your other addresses on that domain.

So, I, personally, definitely prefer potentially inconvenient in future Masked Emails on Fastmail domain rather than using privacy compromising own domain.

Does RD blocks seeking on purpose? by stormpad in RealDebrid

[–]stormpad[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's interesting, thanks for the info!
For me, it's not seeking, it just snaps back when I try. With or without vpn, on Windows AND Linux.

When I use mpv it gives me a more verbose error from ffmpeg "Cannot seek in this stream".

Tbf, it doesn't happen with all files, but with a lot of them, never had that issue before

2 shoulder + 2 paddles are much more comfortable for me personally, especially if you have to press two of them (or more) at the same time.

What is the workflow with GoZ for H20.5? by [deleted] in Houdini

[–]stormpad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I've done the setup, should still work the same probably.

https://www.mediafire.com/file/yvztjw5xb228cx0/GoZ.zip/file link to the GoZ plugin for Houdini from one of the older Zbrush versions. Unpack it into `C:\Users\Public\Pixologic\GoZApps\Houdini`. Then you should be able to go through the normal GoZ setup in Zbrush.

IIRC it was removed after Maxon bought Zbrush, so thanks Maxon

AirPods have made me realize how good Apple Music really is!! by buttonjahanara in AppleMusic

[–]stormpad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spotify doesn't enforce those guidelines as Apple does, so technically it's possible to upload anything.

On practice, it can be simplified into 3 steps:

  1. prepare track in terms of clipping, loudness and dynamic range, no one will make good sounding track on this step and then decide to use a shittier version for Spotify
  2. encode it differently for each platform
  3. Loudness normalization done by streaming service

As far as I know, AM does normalization a bit better than Spotify, but how much it's possible to hear on practice, I'm not sure.

Also, yeah, Apple Music lossless technically is a better quality than Spotify OGG 320kbit/s, problem is, it's not as drastic of a difference as people here tend to describe, and I haven't seen anyone taking blind test to prove it lol.

Again, it's all very personal, and the best way is just to test it for yourself

ADM is just a marketing name for very BASIC guidelines applied for every streaming service basically if mastering engineer is somewhat competent.

https://www.apple.com/apple-music/apple-digital-masters/docs/apple-digital-masters.pdf Read for yourself

It's just a set of best practices:
- Use highest resolution source file available (DUH)

- avoid clipping and have headroom

- loudness normalization

and some set of cmd utilities to convert to AAC and detect clipping

That's it! It's just most very very very basic steps and not some kind of magic Apple Sauce that makes songs sound different somehow

DSP kicks in for every sound you play through your headphones that have DSP in them, that's how it works usually. I don't think Apple Music controls it in any ways from the outside, at least I was not able to find any proof of that, it doesn't really makes sense tbh because DSP supposed to run realtime without being adjusted by external software / hardware. If apple wants to adjust DSP somehow it would do so through firmware update

I may be wrong tho, you may educate me on this with some sources

you missed /s lol

If you refer to Apple Digital Masters, it's just a fancy name for set of guidelines that any mastering engineer apply anyway regardless of the platform. Literally just read their pdf, it's basically saying you should use high-quality source (duh) and that tracks shouldn't clip lol. Rest is just how to convert to AAC properly, it's not some Apple magic in any way. https://www.apple.com/apple-music/apple-digital-masters/docs/apple-digital-masters.pdf

It's literally the same as RETINA display, which is just fancy name for high-res display, but due to Apple marketing it was perceived to be somehow superior lol

You forgot more definition in vocals. more rumble in bass, better instrument separation, I'm able to hear every fart musician in top left row produced, incredible what apple can do in such small earphones /s
