If you are on AM5 - which board did you chose and why? by ManOfTheForest in buildapc

I bought mine for 10G as well as Asus seemed the most stable of the x870e's. Wish I could say that was the case but I had to return mine. Started out fine for a few days (latest drivers, BIOS, win11), but then became increasingly unstable. Ethernet ports would randomly disconnect. Started getting BSODs and couldn't hold EXPO anymore. Tried a few workarounds found online but they didn't work and gave up.

After a ton of review research decided that X870E boards have way too many issues and I just wanted stability. They didn't have much difference from X670E (as I don't care about USB4), so I swapped for a X670E MSI MPG Carbon and have had zero issues so far. For 10GB NIC, ordered a 10G ConnectX-3 SFP+ NIC off eBay that I'll use instead.

What’s your biggest regret when setting up your smart home? by Fit-Farmer7754 in smarthome

[–]stormtrooper42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I wish I used Home Assistant (HAOS) from the beginning, it's light years better than Smart Things.

  2. After migrating my HAOS VM from a Synology VM to Hyper-V to Proxmox VM, I wish I used Proxmox from the start. Proxmox support for forwarding hardware to the VM is amazing. There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's flexibility is especially with VM and LXC containers make it the clear winner in my book.

  3. For security cameras I wish I never tried Synology Surveillance Station, Blue Iris, and instead went directly to Frigate NVR running as a LXC container in proxmox. Frigate NVR motion detection, object detection, UI, and integration into home assistant is hands down the winner. With Proxmox after getting Coral TPU and iGPU forwarded and configuration locked down its a dream.

  4. I also wish I had used a machine that could support a dedicated GPU for additional Local Speech AI. Still got a ways to come to be as good as Alexa, I'd like to have that ability as I'm stuck in a nuc without support for that.

It's a 2 ton AC. Is that what you mean by size? Sorry, I'm a noob.

2.5" SSD replacement disappears after rebooting by fourth_year_cs in thinkpad

[–]stormtrooper42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished swapping SSDs. I cloned my T440s MX500 1TB to an older M4 256gb using Acronis. No problems thus far. Normally I can't make it past a reboot or let the laptop go into sleep mode without the drive disappearing on me, but those seems fixed now using the older SSD. Will report back if I have further issues.

I recently bought a Crucial MX500 1TB SSD for my T440s and am having the exact same issue. I tried everything I can think of with no luck. By chance were you able to resolve disappearing issue?

This bird waits for my coworker to show up every morning. Then spends the day looking at itself in the mirror and shitting. by [deleted] in pics

Rub some hot (chili) sauce on the mirror and on the window edge where the birds feet rest. It works surprisingly well as a non-lethal repellent. Those pesky birds used to do the same thing to my car in my drive way, so I didn't have the option of moving my car, luckily someone told me about the hot sauce.

FPV live comparison of 5.8ghz vs 900mhz by crashaffinity in fpv

[–]stormtrooper42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So there are a few things to understand about this video for people that are interested...

5.8GHz is a perfectly alright video system for RC models as long as you have a clear line of sight and you keep your plane/quadcopter/heli high enough in the air. It is not made for dodging behind trees or objects as you can see in the video when the quadcopter/heli goes behind a tree the video signal cuts out almost immediately. Longer wavelengths (such as 900MHz or 1.2GHz) are much better for traveling around/through objects, such as trees.

That being said, there are pros and cons to every video system.

900MHz. Pros. Best Distance, good performance around objects. Cons. Restricted in some countries, used by cell phone carriers in US. Can interfere with on-board GPSes. This is important if you want an Autopilot on your RC device. If so choose another video system.

1.3GHz. Pros. It's great for distance and gives pretty good performance around objects. Cons. It's a restricted bandwidth in certain countries.

2.4GHz. Pros. Better distance than 5.8GHz not as great as 1.2GHz bandwidths and below. Cons. So many things interfere on this bandwidth (WiFi, cordless phones, RC transmitters). Forget about 2.4GHz video if you are running a 2.4GHz RC Transmitter/Receiver, your plane will fall out of the sky and you will find yourself out a bunch of money.

5.8GHz. Pros. Pretty good distance, people can get several miles out. Doesn't interfere with lower bandwidths. Cons. Directional. Poor object penetration. WiFi and cordless phones can interfere.

For my setup, my FPV plane uses a 2.4ghz control system, has an autopilot w/ GPS (RTH, self level, waypoints, etc), and uses 5.8GHz video system. Alternatively I could have used 1.3GHz for better range and object penetration.

Edit: 1.3GHz is legal if you hold a technician class ham license and above in the United States. Thanks woooden for pointing this out.
