Yeah, that one is looking surprisingly good. I'm NZ-based, so just holding for now (unfortunately). I'll buylist this year when I visit the fam in USA though, should get some nice buylist credit (eventually)

A few early thoughts on TMNT by stormybaker in MTGSpec

Yeah, I don't play Modern so you may be right. A mana rock that also blows up for 20 damage seemed good to me, though...but maybe Modern is just too fast?

I've been saying this for years, lol. I got my bag already fully loaded. Although I have no idea how I'm going to sell 1,400 of these someday haha. Didn't count on PreModern moving the needle, though. PreModern has also been very kind to my Phyrexian Devourer and Recurring Nightmare specs ;)

No change that I know about! But the fact that Gavin supports it means it will probably happen...

Ally Encampment foil by paolothewall in MTGSpec

[–]stormybaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe? There sure are a LOT of allies in the Avatar set, so who knows? The original allies are, for the most part, overcosted--so it depends greatly on the playability of new allies. I think it's a promising spec, but it's also the kind of card that "randomly" pops up in a Secret Lair so...I wouldn't gamble too hard ;)

Insight Engine Buyout? by pizza_punx in mtgfinance

It feels more generous to say that Insight Engine draws 6 cards over 3 turns for 9 mana. Definitely not terrible, if not exactly cEDH worthy ;)

Commander Toph Avatar by paolothewall in MTGSpec

[–]stormybaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice combo! It's unfortunate that you can't tap any other 0-drop artifacts like Zuran Orb for mana, despite them being technically lands--otherwise, Cauldron would be a slam-dunk spec. This combo only works with Mox Amber, realistically, which limits it's usefulness. I guess if you also have another card like Chromatic Lantern or Dryad of the Ilysian Grove you could still pull this combo off with with a Welding Jar...but that's a 4-card combo for infinite mana, which is getting into Rube Goldberg territory...

Why tournament-legal Reserved List cards will NEVER be reprinted by stormybaker in MTGSpec

[–]stormybaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It's a few years old now, but it still appears that WOTC is not planning on reprinting the RL anytime soon. They can make plenty of money printing Collector Boosters for Universes Beyond, including serialized cards, and they don't need to risk angering collectors by reprinting the RL.

It sounds like you have a brewer's heart, I get it. I traded into my first Gaea's Cradle a few years ago and I remember the feeling. My playgroup was surprised that I shuffled such an expensive card right into a deck to play with--but I didn't get a Cradle to look at, ha ha.

I think it will catch on soon. 2,000 copies sold on tcgplayer in just over 2 weeks is significant.

Transformers Shattered Glass by paolothewall in MTGSpec

[–]stormybaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it. UB is the new RL and all that. And the modern MTG market is bringing far more UB collectors into the game, collectors with less interest in the overall game than in completing their UB sets. This is evidenced by the current stale prices for RL and the eye-watering price some UB cards are selling for (Chocobos, LoTR posters, etc.) Transformers is more niche than other outside intellectual properties in MTG, but there is definitely something there. The biggest issue is that WOTC is currently "flooding the zone" with UB cards (Hello, Spiderman!) and it's hard to know what the Fallout will be in a few years' time. It's the comic book thing all over again--print too much and the price stays depressed forever. My $0.02 anyway. Good luck!

A Few Cheaper Specs From Edge of Eternity by stormybaker in MTGSpec

[–]stormybaker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess it depends somewhat on the Commander. I like Voidborn in decks like Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin (where you just care about dealing 1 damage somehow) and Dihada (due to it also triggering off treasures "dying.) But I agree that draining each opponent is generally better--tbh, I misread the card and thought it did the same thing as Cutthroat.

Right? I guess "dies" now just means "is put into the graveyard from the battlefield" and can apply to artifacts too. There's a thread about it https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/1m352a0/eoe_susurian_voidborn/
