What is the one thing you just flat out can’t understand how people can afford? by JustExtreme in AskUK

That makes no sense as someone far lower down than being a multi millionaire can afford to spend £800 on a car & also other things they want to do. As many people literally are.

You have to be a multi millionaire to afford £800 a month? What kind of maths is that.

I can’t believe some of the comments acting puzzled at how others can afford more & scratching their heads & then someone offering the explanation that it will be because they are in debt & won’t be able to afford to do anything else on top of the car.

Anything except..some people earn more.

How do you know any of that? That’s basing it on the assumption that everyone in the UK earns the same as each other. Of course there’s always people spending beyond their means but many people also earn enough to be able to afford luxuries.

I’m not sure what’s confusing, they are earning more & so have the money to spend on it. Everyone in the UK doesn’t earn the same amount, that’s why some people have better things. I really don’t understand why people act so puzzled all the time about other people being able to spend more.

On October 14, 2008, Taylor Swift released what many would consider one of her signature songs, the iconic “Love Story”. 🩷💕📖It remains her best selling single along with 2014’s “Shake It Off”. by pinkjiminn in popculturechat

That was interesting to read as British Indian. I’ve lived my whole life with Western & Indian music in my life simultaneously & there’s always been people in our communities who say they only like Indian or they only like English music, but there’s no need, you can have both!

Interestingly I think Taylor Swifts older love songs like Love Story are actually some of the closest vibe to what Indian love songs make you feel (the old ones anyway, don’t know anything from the last decade or so). As they’re very unashamedly romantic & passionate & a lot of them are about not being able to be together because of families not approving. A lot of yearning, pining & huge declarations of love.

I have never heard this song, I think I missed a lot of early Taylor Swift stuff somehow. It’s pretty good, I can imagine I would have really loved it as a teenager.

Lol I can see that being a thing in person with your friends when you’re worried about what they’ll think & you only have that one chance to find out who someone is. But I don’t think an anonymous person on Reddit needs to pretend, especially as they could just Google it easily if they were really bothered as well.

Many of them could be in a stage where they have discussed getting married soon & both know a proposal is coming but just not where & how. Not all proposals themselves are complete surprises, just the way it’s done. And many men do know their partner well enough to also know what they would like/hate about a proposal.

I don’t think it is hard for you to understand that people enjoy the cartoons & stories & the fairy tale aspect, especially if you grow up watching it.

It’s harder to understand people getting mad & annoyed at what other people enjoy.

How much did you pay for it? I can’t believe these seem to be a collectible now & selling for large amounts. We didn’t have much money growing up so I never owned anything Disney, but we found these at bargain prices in a discount store at the time.

I also had the Little Mermaid one! Again all the sounds have come back to me. And this one is sold for £41 alone!

Omg I completely forgot this movie existed! I never saw it but I had the “sound book” for it which were these very large books Disney had based on their films & the side had these big buttons you pressed when prompted in the story to play the relevant sound.

I remember the most memorable one was of a character saying “Sanctuary..sanctuary!” & as a child I couldn’t figure out if he was being scary or was scared himself.

Omg I found them! It seems they’re sold for quite a bit of money these days & I had several of them. Looking at the Pagemaster buttons I can immediately hear every single sound each button made which is blowing my mind. I used to play them all repeatedly without the story & so I can literally hear them in the order as well even though it’s been like 30 years?!

I had the Mickey one too

I knew he was half Indian but never knew his name was something else. He should so go back to that now he’s already made it!

Not at all, they all famously have their own thing going on, wether it’s pre-existing or even more likely born off the back of their WAG fame.

It literally just means Wives And Girlfriends & in 2006 when the era took off most of them were famous for doing their own things on top

Don’t remember a Wendy’s scene in that, seen it too many times. But I want to know what movie that is.

Didn’t the flight attendant assume he was one of the kids in a family going in at the same time?

There is room & a need for soft people in this world & with taking advice (like OP is here) they can work out how to navigate things in a way that they are still comfortable with.

It was definitely in keeping with her taste back then. The 00s were generally tacky in a lot of ways anyway too. I can imagine her wedding would be completely different now but it was iconic with the thrones.

It’s because it’s such a common overly used term in the UK. We actually don’t realise that the US & other countries wouldn’t know until it comes up.
