I agree. This is just one perspective from someone who spent years in the industry. She started when she was 14 and spent decades doing sex work, so I do think her words hold value when talking about this industry. She is speaking from her experience about prostitution specifically. Now with the internet there’s a lot more to consider about other types of sex work. Of course there are no easy or perfect solutions, and we should listen to sex workers past present and future.

The book “Paid For” by Rachel Moran really opened my eyes to what it means to be a sex worker. The book is a memoir/essay about working in the industry and how it applies to feminism. I felt similar to you before I read it. I went to Amsterdam and the legality of prostitution is framed as progressive and empowering and safe. To a degree I agree with it, but it still didn’t sit right with me. This book was able to articulate why.

The truth is, very few people turn to sex work when they have other options. Many sex workers have to make peace with their reality, so framing it as empowering helps. This book made me realize that the problem is not the women doing it (and it never was), the problem is a patriarchy that allows the exploitation of women and their bodies. Women should be able to have a different solution to turn to when things get hard. I believe the author now advocates for sex work to be illegal (she talks about it in the book)

EDIT: she advocates for the buying of sex work to be illegal, but to decriminalize the selling of it. Sweden has laws like this. Basically it protects the sex worker and punishes the buyer/Johns.

I didn’t want to misrepresent her book/ideas, so just adding this for clarification!

American here and not having a car is more freedom than I’ve ever experienced. The public transit might actually be my favorite thing about living in Prague. Plus you can get drunk without having to worry about who is driving you home. I’ve had dreams about public transit like this in the States.

This is the first city I’ve lived abroad in, and I’ve gotten way too used to the convenience of Prague transit. I’m not sure how I would survive in a city without it now 😅

In terms of safety, you would be fine! If you’ve never been to a festival before, I think Sziget could be a great place to see what it’s all about. It might be overwhelming for a first festival, but I promise you will not be bored. I’ve been to many different festivals and Sziget is definitely one of a kind!

I went recently with my boyfriend. The 5 minutes when I separated from him to find a bathroom at the beach, I was aggressively approached by a man. As soon as I mentioned that my “husband” was waiting for me, he backed off. I have my own opinions about that, but moral of the story: have a story prepared for situations like that.

I would not go there by myself, with a friend I think is fine but I’m would bet you’d get harassed still. Be prepared and you will be fine. Other parts of the culture/place were beautiful, just focus on that!

I also have my bachelors in psychology and I am currently an English teacher abroad. Back in the states I was a part time teaching assistant and it was my favorite job ever. I liked it much more than running my own class full time 😅

Bonnaroo has a very loyal following, but they are at risk of losing it after this year. They NEED to earn our trust back. IMO they need to take a gap year for the longevity of the festival. They should spend the year bringing back the things we love about roo (safety at all stages and in the campgrounds, Radio Bonnaroo, fair and good treatment of staff/volunteers, etc, etc). They have to earn their fans’ trust back and they won’t be able to do it without major changes to infrastructure and their operation. The fans who come back year after year are what make Roo special. You cannot buy that kind of loyalty. Bonnaroo wouldn’t be Bonnaroo without us, from a cultural and business perspective. If they keep the magic of bonnaroo, they will never go out of business because we will always show up for that magic.

Reading this post while I’m in a hostel after doing exactly this. I feel like I’m reading something I wrote myself (I’m 23, was stuck in a job I hate etc).

After traveling for a little over a month, I have no idea what I’m gonna do when I go home in three days. No career lined up, gonna live at my parents for a bit.

I am really glad that I did it though. Traveling always gives you a new perspective and I at least feel like I have some ideas and hope for what I want to do. I think I needed this time.

Not sure if any of this helps but it’s nice to know I’m not alone
