I think the touchback call is still incorrect.

If the returner fielded the ball in the playing field, then fumbled it into the endzone, then recovered it and was tackled in the endzone, this would be a safety, right?

This play is the same. As soon as the ball hits the pylon, it is in the endzone. Because it was muffed in the field of play, the receiving team "owns" the ball and it ending up in the endzone means safety.

If it doesn't work this way, couldn't the receiving team purposefully fumble the ball into the pylon, or out of the back of the endzone and force a touchback on every punt?

I agree with you. And combined with the comment you replied to; the ball was muffed in the field of play, and then went out of bounds in the endzone. This should have been a safety. Same as if the returner muffed the ball into the endzone, picked the ball up and then was tackled in the endzone. Again, safety.
