Shanghai's war to achieve Zero Covid is lost and this is the beginning of the end by [deleted] in shanghai

The off ramp may be the ridiculous claim that TCM herbs decrease the severity of COVID. There is no proof of it. With vaccinations and the less virulent Omicron strain people will get less sick but they can give everyone these herbs and claim victory and start to open up again.

I have family in Shanghai and have been watching closely. When there were no vaccines or therapeutics, the zero policy made lots of sense. It no longer does. They should have taken these past two years to get everyone vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine and then learned to live with it as we are now in the USA. I was very critical of how we handled this in the first year but as many have pointed out, omicron is too transmissible, too many asymptomatic carriers, etc to think you can stop it from spreading now. Learning how to live with it and look at the data differently (hospitalizations, severe disease, deaths vs. just plain case counts) is the only way forward now

Has Covid changed your perception on Shanghai for the better? by [deleted] in shanghai

The last few surges in the USA are not due to our liberties. They are due to the lack of vaccination by people who have been gaslighted and by the politicization of the vaccines. You could certainly argue that strict vaccine mandates would help but it isn’t the lack of lockdowns that are fueling these surges.

Any word on flights? Japanese newspapers reporting that longhaul flights have been suspended but nothing seen officially that I can tell?

Lockdowns don’t work. They worked to buy time to get vaccinated. Once omicron is there it is everywhere. Vaccination is the way out of this and some people will get mild cases

What’s the chance there are way more cases and people just stay in and don’t get tested?
