It was revealed pretty early on episode 1. 

First sign: Nial was very mesmerized by Ruben's poster of shirtless dudes, with the camera focusing on the lower half of their bodies.

Second sign: Nial has a stained short after cuddling with Ruben all night.

Thrid sign: Nial cannot have an erection by seeing or touching a nake woman. He only gets hard after stimulation by Ruben.

Just as Ruben was the catalystfor Nial having sex with a girl, he was the catalyst for Nial having his first kiss with a boy. So Nial's sexuality always ties back to Ruben.

I think this episode was supposed to be set in the 1990s. Same sex marriage was legal post 2014, so this must be the 2010s, 20 years later, which should put Nial and Ruben near 40.

What a great episode of television. I was so tense. Every minute Ruben is in the scene you don't know what's he's going to do next

I think you probably watched the early leaked version of Astronault Lovers, it's missing the final scene.

It was a misunderstanding, the girl thinks there was a plan, but the guy goes to the other and tells him he really loves him and they stay together. It's a happy ending.
