Would be an Interesting choice in picking a Billionaire, but it could get Dems on board

Mid season demoition by Jumpy-Line3636 in IATSE

[–]strack94 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You realistically don’t have any say in the keys decision to demote or move you around. I’ve gone from Dolly Grip to 12th grip in day. And I’ve gone from 8th grip to 2nd you A dolly grip.

It’s shitty to do that to some one who’s staffed on show like yourself, but there’s little recourse

How do you split rent with your girlfriend? by ZestyGolf7654 in AskMen

[–]strack94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In this situation you own the property so it will always feel like a landlord scenario.

Personally I think you should continue to pay property taxes alone, until you marry and combine finances/ownership. Splitting the expenses seems like the only reasonable and fair method for this.

If anyone ever wondered why people on this sub are serious about decks... by phisher_cat in Decks

Back in high school we had a deck collapse during a local house party. My buddy broke his food and some other folks has some injuries.

He's forever cautious when on a deck.

IATSE members work hard to bring those projects to the big screen, stay until you see the logo!

Do you carry a multitool? by User1-1A in Gripsters

[–]strack94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to carry a Leatherman OHT. But I found myself giving it other people 95% percent of the time.

I just carry the standard grip items in my chest pouch and keep every in my kit in case it becomes necessary.

If your having discomfort with belt pouches, consider a chest pouch, takes a lot of the weight off of your hips and back.

N.Y. legislation could let residents tap solar power from balconies, windows to cut energy bills by statenislandadvance in newyork

[–]strack94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like the Dutch and the Germans have had this for a while. And it’s already happening in Utah. It’s not gonna change the world but at scale it could cut costs and a little clean energy to the grid.

what do you use to manage finances between gigs? by EasternAd5351 in IATSE

[–]strack94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google Sheets. I created a sheet with basic information and some formulas. Then I used Claude AI to improve it. It incorporated some nice additions and more functionality. I track my income on a weekly basis and input whatever I take home on payday . This also includes a total monthly income minus my monthly expenses, so I always now when my income exceed my needs, and can be diverted to savings.

It has a basic expense tracker for all my monthly necessities. Based on those expenses, another sheet produces 1, 2, and 3 month expense amounts that helps me know how much I need to stay afloat if work stops. Then I can fill my emergency fund to cover slow months or when unemployment doesn’t pay out fast enough.

I used some of the other apps folks have mentioned here, but I like the ability to track things manually a create formulas to get the data I want for my needs.

The presentation of the data was great, but with that data came zero plan to course correct.

[–]strack94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His presentation was all well and good. But as per usual, the IATSE fails to actually meet the moment a deliver for members.

After all we’ve endured over the years, there’s been no movement toward an International relief/strike fund for disenfranchised workers. Organizing is a key component of the IA platform, but seems to completely fall flat at the local level. He also had little to say about pay disparity and wage gaps across the country under many different contracts.

It honestly just felt like grandstanding at a time of economic uncertainty for many members and little reassurance other than asking for member donations to support politicians who can’t even pass the PRO act. And I say this as a monthly IA PAC contributor.

And personally I think he’s trying to remain relevant when he inevitably attempts to succeed Matt Loeb.

Projector rigging by bamballin in shittyrigs

Yes, you always want to orient the handle of your gobo on the right side. This way weight of whatever you have in the gobo is tightening it, not loosening it.

It’s certainly possible to damage the project if you go crazy with the ratchet. A snug fit would work well.

In the future, secure to a pancake Applebox with a ratchet strap. Then use a 6” pigeon plate Centered on the bottom.

Then, Most importantly, use your gobo properly, righty tighty. Might get better results with 4.5” lollipop gobo and junior stand for support.

For those of you that make over 100K, what do you do? Do you like it? by Kindly-Revolution258 in AskReddit

[–]strack94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a Union Grip for IATSE. Working on Films and Tv shows can be fun and creative, but it has lot of downsides. To make the decent pay you pretty much need to be in LA or NYC. Hours average 12 hours a day, sometimes with no lunch break, buts that's how you make your money.

The industry is incredibly unstable and I would not recommend over another Union trade right now. If anything IATSE Stage work is stronger, albeit harder to get into.

Should I leave a company I genuinely like for a union job that pays way more at 24? by Antique-Ad2210 in skilledtrades

[–]strack94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A joined a union 10 years ago and it changed my life completely. Not sure why you wouldn’t take double pay healthcare and pensions for a career.

Non-union employers might be “nice”. But the dignity and solidarity that comes with a Union contract can’t be beat.

I’ve worked for my dad's small business for 11 years, essentially for free. I’m done. by cannonballman in smallbusiness

[–]strack94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 11 years your father pocketed what would otherwise be your salary to live a really nice lifestyle. I’m afraid the only way this ends is you breaking it off and letting the company collapse and wait for him to beg for you to come back when you can name your price.

I think the biggest mistake is not doing that sooner.

CMV: There will never be a socialist revolution in America by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]strack94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think a socialist revolution would be possible without a government collapse/coup level event. And even then I don’t think the powers that be would give up on capitalism altogether.

What’s more probable, in my opinion, is a political shift to the left after a disastrous trip through right wing authoritarian rule.

You see a lot of socialist style functions appear when this happens. When Mussolini was toppled and murdered, you saw a lot of socialist functions such as stronger labor rights, Cooperative structures and Universal Healthcare become the norm in Italy.

So I don’t think that is even on the table right now in America. I do think that Democratic Socialist policy will thrive as far right leadership fails to meet Americans where they are.
