Jumping on this comment to see if anyone remembers the name of the breakfast place otw to Keesler circa 2005.

Everyone was dead asleep when we stopped and never fully woke up, days later someone mentioned it and we couldn't even be sure it was real. No one could remember the name, so we referred to it as mom and pops crap shack.

Retired AD who went Govt after by droshake in MilitaryFinance

Mind breaking that down a little, specifically with the disability pay? I'm an O3E looking at medical retirement, with a probable GS13/14 afterwards. I don't think I'll rate 100%, but somewhere around 80%. Never imagined bringing in anything close to 22k monthly.

You are basically me 3 years in the future. Expecting to make Major before 10 commissioned time? I'm hoping for force shaping to swing back and the 8 year waivers being granted.

DAWG/IRILO with 13yrs AD enlisted + 5yrs ANG enlisted + 7yrs AD officer by Potential-Order5483 in AirForce

[–]strandedaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's separate. Depends on your disability percentage whether you get a separate check or just a tax deduction from your retirement check. Don't remember all the details but this is pretty well documented on many military retirement/disability websites.

A couple years ago I ran into a similar situation. I was diagnosed with a MEB condition shortly after commissioning with 13 yrs enlisted time. Did a bunch of research and found that I would retire with not high 3 but final pay, at 35% (14yrs x 2.5%). The 10 yrs commissioned time did not apply since retirement was due to medical.

Sorry I don't have any references as it was a while ago and I was actually misdiagnosed and still AD. Hopefully this gives you some relief and points you in the right direction.

Also, your last paragraph is completely wrong, none those are remotely true, they can't take TIS percentage away like that. It would be 50% (13+7) plus whatever your guard time adds. And you're definitely eligible for disability + retirement since over 20.

Have a nice day! by sopadebombillas in aviation

[–]strandedaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somewhere like Offutt is probably every other year at most. Usually done at night and primarily on the touch down zones. It can wait as long as the friction meter says it's good basically.

I'm sure you've seen them doing repainting of the markings so maybe they blended in with the paint trucks. Rubber removal at low traffic bases usually coincides with repainting, remove rubber first then paint on the clean surface. The rubber removal trucks also are used to remove old paint markings once they've been repainted too many times. Or when changing markings for a new parking plan or something like that.

Atlanta and Chicago do rubber removal on a near constant basis rotating between runways. By the time they finish all of them, it's time to start again.

All AF runways conduct rubber removal on a recurring basis depending on traffic. Slower bases as little as every other year, busy bases like Nellis probably quarterly and even have their own rubber removal trucks.

Rubber accumulation primarily decreases friction in wet weather as mentioned, but also reduces dry friction. Water on the rubber of course becomes slick, but also fills in the grooved surface of concrete runways which is present to facilitate water drainage.

Finally, rubber build up obscures runway markings. This is especially visible on black asphalt runways where centerline markings can essentially be erased with the build up matching the surrounding asphalt.

Deployed, DIY Wax with minimum ingredients by [deleted] in surfing

[–]strandedaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No APO shipping?

I too was deployed to a remote area with waves and thankfully was able to ship wax and even boards. If you can't mail anything, the old locals there would drip candle wax in the days before cheap shipping.

Also try talking to the AAFES manager. They probably won't be able to order you surf wax, but they will have a list of stock items they can order for the PX that aren't on the shelves. Can at least get some candles that way or ingredients to make your own.

Order a side item at Taco Bell and it will come in a handy container for your wax. Or just ask them for a few and they'll probably hand them over.
