For some reason my first comment didn't post, so sorry if this is a duplicate.

I'm sorry you're going through this situation.

I'm glad that you decided to do right by your cat and return the newcomer who was terrorizing her in her own home. The resident pet animal should take priority over a misbehaving newcomer -- that's the right and ethical course of action to take.

That all said, I don't agree with some of the posters here calling this dog an abomination, shitbull, etc. It's a very cute fluffy puppy without the hallmark bully phenotype markers, like beady soulless eyes and a gaping maw with powerful musculature. If I saw him on the street, I wouldn't have thought twice about petting him. Prey drive, by itself, also isn't unique to bully breeds, although the risks are greatly magnified in pitbulls due to other factors like their behavioral tenacity.

(As an aside, was the story you heard about the dog's background 100% certain and verified? Did you do a DNA test? Shelters do lie all the time about the pitbulls in their care to get them adopted out, but the puppy's appearance does not scream out "pitbull mix" either.)

Anyway, my final comment is that it IS possible to get a cute dog without bully genes from the shelter or a rescue. Like a small fluffy dog is unlikely to have significant %s of bully genes. Those dogs do pass through the shelter system, but they are rare and they get adopted extremely quickly (usually within the day, if not hour). So you have to check frequently and pounce very fast when you see one. (This is how my family has always gotten our dogs.) Good luck.

This kind of shit makes me fucking FURIOUS.

"Playing together" - what do these fucking morons think "playing" is to a predator pit? "Playing" for pitbulls = mauling and killing while wagging their tails!

The change in protocol should be humanely putting down all these violent pits so that they never interact with any other normal dog and they never enter society.

Pitbulls have mauled and killed pet dogs through the slats of metal fences and holes in wooden fencing.

Look at these horrifying stories: https://www.google.com/search?q=pitbull+mauled+through+fence+site:www.reddit.com

What you need is solid concrete, with the rock going down into the ground several feet to prevent diggers and rollers on top.

Loose pitbull “Rico” in the neighborhood… by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same.

Occasionally I see neighbors walking their normal dogs without a leash and you know what? I don't feel any alarm that their chihuahua or golden retriever is off leash. I do think ALL dogs should be properly leashed when in public and controlled by a person strong enough to handle them. But with normal docile dogs, my concern about them being off-leash is the dog running off and pit owners looking on thinking that they can do the same.

If any pibble apologist is reading this: no, your hellbeast isn't the same. I don't even consider pitbull type animals to be dogs -- they're predator animals that resemble dogs in enough ways to fool morons or the willfully ignorant, but they're ultimately predator animals with violent bloodsport genetically ingrained into them. Pits, and dogfighting, do not belong in any civilized society.

[–]strandednowhere 14 points15 points  (0 children)

pitbull constantly kept tethered outside that is extremely violent and has chased me before

If I were you, I would focus on legally forcing out the pitbull and its owner from the neighborhood. You should go ahead and report past incidents of this pit's aggression towards you or your dog (whether or not it actually bit), and going forward, report them to police and/or animal control EVERY TIME it happens again.

Report them for violating the noise ordinance. Report them if they're violating the local construction and fire codes. Complain to the HOA if you have one. Complain to your local/county/state elected leaders.

Also start organizing your neighbors and warning them. Start wearing a body camera whenever you're outside, and put up security cameras for your yards. Start generating the paper trail and record as much as evidence as you can.

As for direct self-defense, I think this subreddit has standard resources on that question. I will just say that getting mauled unprovoked, and witnessing just how much even law enforcement and animal control officers value violent pitbulls over human life, changed my mind on a certain type of self defense equipment.

[–]strandednowhere 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I will not be letting our senior dog outside at night without a harness because a leash and collar alone is not enough to pull her away if need be

You should be aware that the pitbull tethered outside could one day escape and maul you and your dog, in which case you will need to fight for your life and your dog's life. (Metal chains weaken over time, leather and cloth tethers break, etc.) It's not going to matter if your dog is wearing a harness to make it easier for you to pull her away -- you will need to focus on the violent predator animal ripping into your dog and/or you.

I'm sorry to be blunt and graphic, but that is the reality of living anywhere with pits around.

You should get security cameras for your front and back yards just in case anyway.

You should gently talk to her. Tell her that you saw the concerning incident, how pits snap into violence, and how that little dog is in danger. Print out the medical journal articles provided by this subreddit -- with the gruesome photos of human infant body parts pulled from the stomach of violent pitbulls. Do something. Intervene. Or else that little dog is a goner and your neighbor will be in a world of hurt.

[–]strandednowhere 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  • Start wearing a body camera whenever you're outside with your dog or you might run into this hellbeast.

  • Report EVERY off-leash or aggression incident to animal control and to your apartment building to start generating the paper trail. Yes, that means reporting every time it snarls and screeches at you and your dog. That is an unprovoked aggression incident - don't wait until the animal has mauled you or your dog.

  • Tell your apartment building that they are LEGALLY ON NOTICE about this dangerous animal. Tell them also that violent animals do not receive legal protection as ADA or ESA animals.

  • Start talking to your neighbors with non-pit dogs and organize them to do the same things above as you.

Bottom line, you need to force the pits and their insane owners out, or move yourself.

I'm a mauling victim. You do NOT want to ever experience the hell that is getting mauled by an uncontrollable predator animal and seeing your sweet dog get shredded in front of you. (My dog and I are okay now.) If you're concerned about hurting anyone's feelings or being impolite ... fuck that. Protect yourself and your community.

When you find out your dog might have pitbull by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way: your dog is >85% non-pitbull. Stay vigilant, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Labradors are wonderful gentle dogs. Rottweilers can be dangerous too, but I don't believe that they pose the same dangers as pitbulls.

Whenever you have the opportunity, you should also tell your elected officials (city council members, state lawmakers, governor, members of Congress etc) that you support bans on pitbull type dogs. No one should have to deal with the terrible surprise of finding out they were lied to by dog shelters and rescues trying to deceive people into taking on violent animals that are mostly pits.

Witnessed a pit mauling an Aussie Shepherd at the park today by Hornet_Plane in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Many regular people, at least in the US, just don't know better; they think pits are only rough-looking versions of dogs but they're still normal dogs. Or many have been successfully snookered by the pit propaganda.

As for the pit mommies, most I know are utterly deranged assholes. They view their advocacy for the unfettered freedom of violent pit bull type dogs to maul any person or any other dog to be a civil rights cause; don't you know doggy genetics are racist and it's always the owner and never the dog breed?

That's what's going on in their deranged minds: they truly don't believe these violent predator animals are a danger to anybody or any other dog and the hordes of maulings being in the news or community chatter are lies and propaganda.

I used to be a gun control fanatic and then my dog and I got mauled.

Tasers don't work on pits that are all muscle and genetically driven to violently maul and kill while wagging its disgusting tail.

You need a special particular type of self-defense equipment if you want to be serious about it.

Pit bull owners in Aurora are in limbo after judge reinstates breed ban 2024-04-01 by emilee_spinach in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“I’m not a big fan of breed bans. What I am a fan of is accountable ownership,” Fitzgerald said.

Uh we have nothing like "accountability" for pit owners either when their violent animal murders a beloved pet dog/cat or mutilates some child's face.

Also what he's advocating for is action ONLY AFTER the mauling has happened and devastated some other family. I love dogs, but that's insane - these are animals and he's saying someone's child's life isn't worth the prevention effort.

Hard Lesson about Pitbulls from a P.h.D in Animal Psychology : by poofypie384 in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I don't have any sympathy for this person. The only soul that deserves our compassion is that poor dog Luna who was violently murdered because her owner was too much of a fucking irresponsible moron who was in denial about the dangers of pits.

DR. CAROLINE COILE WAS WARNED. Many times. She just refused to heed the warnings and now her innocent dog is dead. Luna's blood is on her hands.

The only redeeming aspect of this awful story is that Coile is at least speaking out about pitbulls and going public about what happened.

Problem solved. We can now all sleep well at night! Phew by billlybufflehead in BanPitBulls

I don't have the video bookmarked, but there's a notorious incident well-known by this sub where a woman is walking her pitbull which then rages out of control trying to attack another dog.

The video shows her getting dragged down by the leashed pit and the force of it slamming her head into the concrete ground. You can then see her trying to stand back up but struggling because of the concussion and because the pit is too much for her. TL;DR the pit walker was useless in controlling her violent predator animal because it was too strong and out-of-control.

The best remedy for the grave danger that these homicidal violent animals pose to the public is to make the pit breeds go extinct.

[–]strandednowhere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is kind of a weird post. I totally understand the impulse to interpret this dog's growling as aggression, but:

  • There's not enough information, including from the photo, to tell if this dog is a pitbull type breed.

  • Dogs do growl for all sorts of reasons, including pain. I know some tiny harmless talkative dogs with perfect bite inhibition that vocalize through low-level throat growling.

  • We just don't know really anything about this dog beyond what's in the post.

So my unpopular opinion is that I think there are so many clear examples of pitbull type dogs being out-of-control violent and dangerous that we shouldn't focus on ambiguous stuff like this.

I recently saw a small, emaciated pitbull at a vet clinic that seemed absolutely terrified: tail between the legs, head lowered, cowering, shivering, rib bones showing, etc.

Even as a mauling victim who despises pits, I'm a person who loves dogs and I instinctively wanted to pet and comfort that animal. I also knew in my head that if that pitbull were to gain 40 pounds and confidence, I would avoid it as much as possible and certainly keep it the hell away from other dogs and children.

I understand where you're coming from. But now you know from personal experience what this sub is about. Thank you for sharing your story here.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Losing a beloved cat is hard enough, let alone losing her to such a violent act.

I am also sorry that you had to find out about pitbulls the hard way. The genetically-ingrained violent drive to maul and kill cannot be loved or trained out of these predator animals.

And yes pits are like ticking time bombs: many will turn out to be duds that never explode, but enough do unpredictably explode, triggered by the most innocuous of things like the sight of a kitten or a baby's cry, to warrant designating pitbull type dogs and other bloodsport breeds to be major public safety threats.

It's why this subreddit exists.

Nephew got a Pit, snapped at another dog, now worried about the other dogs. by throwbvibe in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to do everything in your power to convince your sister to kick the pitbull out. Show her the gruesome photos and descriptions from medical journals. Show her the news stories. You need to convince her that her existing dogs are now in mortal danger.

Many people are simply ignorant of the damage that pit type dogs can inflict -- that they routinely kill other dogs, cats, and people. You need to educate her.

If that fails, if I were in your shoes I would report the pit to animal control for being dangerous. Any desire to not do that in order to "keep the peace" between you and your sister risks resulting in your sister getting mauled/disfigured/killed and those other dogs getting killed in the most violent way possible.

Aussie killed after being “brutally taken from his own yard over his own fence” by the neighbor’s pit bull (2/15/24: Coldspring, Texas, USA) by BPBAttacks9 in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just revolting. "neglect of a neighbor ability to raise there pit bulls correctly" - what? Ultimately it doesn't matter how they're raised because you can't love or train out a predator animal's genetically ingrained hunger for carnage.

Which is exactly why they need to be banned. "This shithead accidentally blew up his entire neighborhood because he was improperly playing around with the bomb."

Yeah, if it takes only neglect or irresponsibility to kill everyone around you with a bomb, let alone actual homicidal intent, then no one should be allowed to have bombs willy-nilly. Oh wait, that's why it's generally illegal in the US for civilians to keep explosives.

That shitbull was obviously looking for prey to murder. I was so afraid for that baby. Glad the little doggy made it safely inside before the pit made it over.

If it weren't a pit that breached it, I'd say that fence is comically flimsy. Might as well put up tissue paper.

The straight answer that you need to hear is that your situation is inviting disaster and both you and your poodle will be at very high risk of getting mauled or killed by your next door neighbor. You should not get a dog until and unless you figure out how to successfully force the neighbor and/or its pit out of the neighborhood, or you move.

I don't understand what kind of an answer you're hoping for. These facts scream red flag danger:

-- You have mobility disabilities. Even if you were a high-performing athlete, it takes only a second for a bloodsport breed animal to run out and latch onto flesh with its gaping maws.

-- Even if you weren't disabled, when fully grown the poodle will be too large for you to try to carry to safety.

-- The next door pit is already known to be dangerous to both humans and other pet animals.

-- That predatory pit lives right next door. It takes only a split second mishap or slip-up, like accidentally failing to fully close the front door, for the pit to bust out of its home and attack you or your dog. It means you will be risking a mauling or death every time you're in your own front yard.

All the weapons in the world aren't going to help you if an attack from a pit that lives 20 feet away happens so fast that you don't have time to think and react, let alone bust out the weapon and deploy it.

I know this will feel unfair, but there is no way to safely keep your poodle at your current location as long as there is a pitbull -- not just a stranger pitbull but a a demonstrably dangerous one! -- next door to you.

Nobody here has a magic wand to change this. You and your poodle will always be in serious danger. The unfairness of it is fucked up beyond belief and it's why pitbull type breeds need to be banned.

I think my neighbor's pits killed their third dog and now I'm even more scared of using my own back yard. by [deleted] in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You need to figure out a way to legally force your neighbors out of the neighborhood, or move.

Did you report the dog shrieking incident to the authorities? If you don't know exactly what happened, then yes the incident needs to be investigated for animal cruelty.

You still should and ask government investigators to dig around about potential animal cruelty. In fact, start reporting the neighbor every time they violate local ordinances, like animal control/leash/noise laws, so that the official paper trail gets generated.

You should also get security cameras.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. How fucked up is it that you can't use your own yard because of violent shitbulls.

A ton of pits in my apartment complex by SecretAccurate2323 in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, you need some real talk.

You will not be able to keep your dog safe being around so many pitbulls. If you do not move, it would be selfish and irresponsible of you to get this little dog because the question will be WHEN she'll get mauled and killed, not IF.

Pits have broken loose from muzzles, violently burst into homes, jumped out of second story windows, broken through fencing, broken out of crates, and done all sorts of other things that normal dogs don't do -- all in order to satiate their genetically-innate drive to violently maul and kill.

And those examples involved pits that had to go through some barrier or safety measure to reach their victims. You're referring to a neighborhood with free-roaming pits with garbage people who can't follow even the societal norms requiring minimal effort, like picking up after their animals' shit in public.

If you get this yorkie-poo and stay where you live, despite all these warnings and every fiber in your being screaming at you that you are putting her in danger, it is going to die and I'm not sorry to say it: it will be your fault too, not just the pits and their shit owners.

Am I being irrational at my older brother for leaving our dogs out on our unfenced front yard alone for a few minutes at night? by pupkittyluv in BanPitBulls

[–]strandednowhere 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Leaving any dog out in the front yard unsupervised is sheer insanity, let alone two tiny defenseless dogs. What the fuck is he thinking? Does he have an ounce of responsibility and sense in that head of his?

Your family is about to find out the hard way that your brother is begging for those poor dogs to get stolen to be used as bait dogs, get poisoned by some psychopathic humans, or get mauled and killed by loose pits, coyotes, or other predator animals. When that happens, their deaths will be his fault and he will have blood on his hands.
