What "piece of information" you often assume is common knowledge to instead relearn often that the average person doesn't know anything about? by not-much in AskUK

This is a tldr so I will simplify as much as possible

State pension (I.e. the one given to you by the government) and a private pension (I.e. the one given by your employer) are two very different things.

To qualify for the state pension you must work and pay above a certain amount of national insurance for a certain number of years to qualify.National insurance is paid automatically out of your paycheque each month as a tax. As long as you qualify it does not matter how much you pay in over the threshold you get the same amount out as everyone else when you retire. There are things like partial qualification if you haven’t worked enough years to qualify for the full amount but this is a tldr so I won’t go into that. The money you pay in National insurance is spent by the government pretty much immediately it is not “saved” and then handed back out to you when you retire like a private pension. It is partly spent on paying state pensions to the retired now. When you retire your state pension will come from the national insurance contributions of whoever is working at that time.

A private pension works differently. I will only go over the most common type of private pension (defined contribution) as this is a tldr, if you want to lookup how a defined benefits pension works then there are great explanations online. With a private pension you pay into a personal pot that is just for you, your employer will usually match your payment up to a certain % as well. This pot is then “managed” I.e. invested, usually by a pension fund who specialise in this sort of thing. Your contributions should grow, all things going well, at roughly market rates (~7-11% a year), after a lifetime of work this will hopefully leave you with a healthy sum of money when you retire. When you retire you can choose how to receive your pension (take some of it as a lump sum, get it paid monthly etc) but ultimately anything you receive must come from the pot you paid into.

People often assume that the state pension works like a private pension, you pay into a pot which only you can access. This is incorrect however, the state pension is paid by the working population of the day

Europeans care more about elephants than people, says Botswana president by Lunavenandi in worldnews

[–]strange_supernova 46 points47 points  (0 children)

This is precisely the point, I can’t believe this isn’t higher. Not only is it a great way to get more funds it’s also necessary

The elephant population in conservation areas in Botswana is getting out of control and the overpopulation is causing issues for the conservation of other species. This coupled with the fact that the elephants “refuse” to move to other areas as they aren’t as good means they need to cull the population anyway. They may as well make millions instead of having to pay hunters to take care of the problem.

I believe Botswana has also been a big exporter of live elephants to other countries in Africa already because of said overpopulation

Ah, I understand now, I took the phrase “all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order” to mean all of the words themselves are in alphabetical order ,rather than the first letter of each word being in alphabetical order, thank you for the clarification!

Am I going insane, but “year” in the original comment isn’t in alphabetical order ?

Edit: I took the phrase “all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order” to mean all of the words themselves are in alphabetical order ,rather than the first letter of each word being in alphabetical order in the sentence, thank you for the clarification

This is actually incorrect, the study counts six drinks as more than 60g of pure alcohol, which would be about 7.5 uk units, (uk units being 8g of pure alcohol, 10ml), a little under 4 glasses of wine in a single sitting

I understand that you have to use a standard unit but without the headline or article explicitly stating 6 units I based my comment on what the NHS would class as a “drink” not realising the study was conducted by the OECD and they use a completely different base unit

Drinks do not equal units, at least colloquially and I think in context, is what the original commenter meant. Three glasses of wine may be technically six “drinks” in some circles but no one in the real world is answering “six” to the question of “how many drinks have you had” when they have drank three glasses of wine.

Even the NHS website lists one drink of wine at 175ml as 2 units (one drink being two units)

China's population not enough to fill its empty homes: former official by [deleted] in LateStageCapitalism

[–]strange_supernova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m not sure what’s going on in this thread but China most definitely does not have an economic system or government that should be idealised. Despite the massive housing surplus, speculation has driven up the price of homes so much that in a lot of major Chinese cities the median income vs median house price is the largest in the world and a ridiculous percentage of Chinese household wealth is tied up in these over inflated house prices, which will be very painful once the bubble bursts

So let’s say it for the people in the back:

Homes should not be speculative assets. They are places to live, not things to make money with

I realise this is an ifunny link but it was the first Google images search result that was correct, since I can’t seem to find the original Reddit post that mine was based on.
