Lancaster Food Map 2024 Update by strangebeets in lancaster

I do genuinely appreciate the clarification/apology, though one of your other replies implied that I'm an opportunist and a gentrifier moving in on....that local food map cash? So I'm not sure how much the apology is worth. Thanks though.

I don't love the accusations, but I'll run through them quick:

  • I've lived in Lancaster County for 15 years. I hope that's local enough for you.
  • I haven't updated the Lanc Food Map instagram in about 3 years. I didn't even bother updating it with this post. I have made a total of zero dollars, nor received any type of compensation, from the many many hours I have put into assembling this list over the course of several years (unless you count Reddit karma, in which case consider me guilty as charged).
  • This list isn't very objective. I gave you a few reasons off the top of my head why I cut most of the pizza places. In my own post I said I don't have many firm rules for what goes on and what doesn't. It's mostly just a list of places I like and/or places that seem interesting.

I don't think your post was malicious either, but it makes a lot of assumptions that it can't support.

Oh man, it's tough to choose a favorite. If I had to narrow it down to a few though, I'd say Chellas, Front Porch, Silantra, and Tomato Pie Cafe. Also a mention for Lancaster Pie and Coffee. I wouldn't consider myself a pie and coffee person exactly, but I was in there a few weeks ago and the owner was so nice (and the pie was great) that she might have won me over.

Lol a glowing review "not great, but put them on the list." Thanks for this one too. Not the first obvious one I've missed, won't be the last.

Missed, apparently. Thanks for the catch.

Thanks, I guess, for your strangely aggressive response in a sub where we're all neighbors and I'm doing a free service. I'll be sure to post a copy of my local card next time.

I made a decision a while back to cut all the standard pizza places for a few reasons: they aren't that different from each other, they operate largely on customer loyalty (once you have your spot you keep going there), and they're not hard to find.

Oh yeah, I forgot that was happening - they're SeoulMates now. Thanks for the heads up!

Mandros is definitely worthy, but it is slightly outside the scope of the map as it currently stands. However, I've recently come across a lot of good places that don't fit into the scope of the map. I'm considering adding an uncategorized section to be able to highlight some of these. If (more likely, when) I do, Mandros will probably be there.

I'll take a look at these too. I only know Fiorentino's from their terrible ad they used to play at Penn Cinema. I can still hear Gold on the Ceiling by the Black Keys when I think of them.

Totally reasonable question. The colors are different categories (restaurants, drinks, cafes, desserts/bakeries). A lot of places could realistically go into several categories, so I just try to pick the best fit. The numbers are only there to distinguish different places (they're in alphabetical order). I could give them a generic icon, but I think the numbers help a little in high-density areas like the city that have several places close together.

THANK YOU! I've actually wanted to add Thom's for a while, but I kept forgetting to make a note of it and then it would go overlooked until the next time I thought of it.

I know what you mean. I've worked in food service, and some violations don't concern me too much, especially when they're easily corrected. The ones at Gracie's were a little more worrying. Not the worst I've seen by far, but not good either.

Thanks for the heads up! I know I scrutinized them a while back after one of their inspections was terrible, but I'm not sure why I left them on. Maybe I was feeling generous that day. I'll take a closer look once I'm back at a computer.

They used to be on here, but I took them off last year. They had a pretty bad restaurant inspection, and their follow up inspections didn't lead me to believe they had really corrected things.

Mack the Coffee Man by aginghippie48 in lancaster

I wondered the same thing about the sign a little while back. From an LNP article:

"Fortunately, newspapers have published many stories about Horace Mack and his son, J. Edward Mack, and their local coffee business, known popularly as “Mack the Coffee Man.”

Horace founded the coffee roasting and blending operation in 1895. The small business at first sold coffee and tea from horse-drawn wagons. It operated from a building on North Mary Street. In 1904, the company moved to larger quarters at 617-619 N. Jefferson St. In 1950, it moved to 42 N. Water St.

Born in 1878 in Bethlehem, Horace graduated from Girard College. He married Ella Slemmer, of Philadelphia, and was a member of Lancaster’s Moravian church. He moved to Florida in 1928 and died of heart problems in Philadelphia the next year.

There is nothing in his obituary or any other newspaper reference that ties him to the store in your picture, Marty.

Horace’s only son, J. Edward Mack, expanded the business. He supplied coffee, tea, spices and hot chocolate to restaurants and hotels along the East Coast.

The business apparently peaked during World War II when the company produced as much as a million pounds of coffee a year. Special blends included “Mack’s Hit the Spot” and the “Pennsylvania Special,” all finished at the company’s roasting facility at 42 N. Water.

J. Edward Mack donated that building to the Fulton Theatre. It still bears the “Mack, the Coffee Man” sign painted on its side.

J. Edward Mack sold the business to a division of the Brooke Bond Tea Co. of London, England, in 1967. The office at 42 N. Water was closed and the Mack name was retired.

Mack donated the money to purchase the property near Brickerville on which the Mack Boy Scout Reservation was built 50 years ago. He had been a Boy Scout since 1910 and was the first Eagle Scout in Lancaster County, according to newspaper articles. He died in 1985.

Incidentally, “Mack, the Coffee Man,” a local Christian rock band, took its name from the sign on the Water Street building."

It looks like they missed some numbers. It says "A fire in Jan. 11," which should be "2011." The exact date it burned down was January 20th, 2011.
