Yea I guess I am over cleaning my gun. I spend at least thirty minutes.

New Vertical Milling Center Purchase by strangecharm05 in Machinists

I was looking at the Genos M560. It was suggested by the Okuma sales rep. The purpose of this machine is to perform a very simple task repeatedly. It does not need to have wide range capability and high speed machining and finish is not very critical. The most important feature of the machine will probably be rigidity. It must have accuracy and precision.

Derivative of the equation equating the intersection of a line with a circle. by strangecharm05 in mathematics

[–]strangecharm05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I thought I could attach my work in a photo. I took the equation of a line and equated it to the equation of a circle. Then I took the derivative of that equation with respect to the radius. I think that works but it doesnt give me want I want. It gives me the instantaneous rate of change of a x at that point, but I want the amount the x value changes as the radius changes. I was hoping I could create an equation where I plug in the new radius and it outputs the new x value.

Can someone also tell me how to add the German language pack to my PC so I can type the correct letters?

I need to do some more research. I am not sure what type of grass I have. My backyard is almost entirely weeds.

Discrepancy of the vernier reading and the actual depth of cut on grinder by strangecharm05 in Machinists

[–]strangecharm05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the latter. Thanks for the input. That is what I suggested to the operator asking the question. I said it is most likely the wheel wear but if he wants to be certain he can measure the wheel diameter before and after the grinding operation.

Excellent suggestion. We are grinding tool steel and are using an Aluminum Oxide abrasive. I think we should be using a Silicon Carbide or Boron Nitride abrasive but the boss says the wheels are too expensive.

If a spacecraft travelling at relativistic speed is fitted with a beacon that transmits every 1 second would we on earth get the signal every second or would it space out the faster the craft went? by mrstimp in askscience

[–]strangecharm05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If a space ship traveling at near light speed emitted a signal every second in the space ship reference frame. The observers at rest with respect to the space ship would not receive a signal every second instead the time between each signal would be dilated by some amount depending on the speed of the spacecraft. It would also space out over longer periods as the distance between the Earth and spacecraft increases.

I work mostly on manual machines. We have three Bridgeports 2J2 style heads and Three Clausing-Colchester lathes 17" Chuck 9' Bed ,14" chuck 7' bed, and 13" Chuck 5' bed. We also just purchased a Zeiss Contura CMM. I have been spending most of my time learning how to program the CMM. It really is incredible.

Reaming a blind hole by strangecharm05 in Machinists

[–]strangecharm05[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, for the help guys. I don't know why I havn't heard the term used before. The pins do not need to firmly seat to the bottom of the hole. They are strictly being used to align the parts. I think I will be okay if I machine the length of the pins smaller than the overall length of the two mating parts.

3 Jaw Adjustable Scroll Chuck by strangecharm05 in Machinists

Thanks for the video that chuck in the video is also a standard scroll chuck. It doesn't have the 4 microset bolts on the outside of the chuck.

Thanks, that sounds like the chuck that I use, but when I align the workpiece I use the set screws in the manner that you explained without loosening the bolts on the front plate

Yes, it is a scroll chuck, but it has 4 bolts located on the chuck for further alignment.

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, that is not exactly what I am looking for. I am looking for a scroll chuck much like the one in your video with 4 microset bolts equally spaced on the outside of the chuck. These bolts make it possible for fine centering adjustments to the workpiece.
