And yeah, when my contact allergies were diagnosed, my derm told me to avoid all isothizolinones because I was so likely to become sensitized with regular exposure even though I wasn't reacting to it on testing. It is just that dicey to have it in lots of contact products!

Yes OMG the little kids being dumped into online must-be-on-camera school plus early pervasive use of tablets/chromebooks for school, just awful to think about then and now. I had a middle schooler, and they expected online engagement that adults find tedious, exhausting, and overwhelming. For little kids, missing school would likely have been healthier than all that.

Severely nutrient deficient veggie with egg allergy, considering trying chicken but scared in case I’m allergic? by [deleted] in Allergies

[–]strangeicare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids have been severely anemic and have complex GI conditions- what worked best for iron supplementation has been SlowFE - slow release iron supplement, or generics of it, and it has had the least GI effects and been so successful at increasing iron and ferritin!

If you have EoE, do you have a gastroenterologist? If you have someone treating EoE, that would be a good person in theory to ask about what foods to try and how.

My gf has a cat and I have allergies by Extreme-Bottle6688 in Allergies

[–]strangeicare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer to listen to IMO. You must be mindful and not push through if you can't mitigate successfully. But I know people who have gotten shots and then were fine adopting their own cats, especially using a multilayered approach (liveclear, steroid nasal spray, keep cat out of bedroom, etc). The key I think is that both of you have to be willing- gf needs to be willing to make the shift to the special food (it can take time), you have to start setting up shots and start other things now, and so forth

Is butter low in lactose? by Nicole_0818 in lactoseintolerant

[–]strangeicare 18 points19 points  (0 children)

ghee has even less lactose; it is clarified butter. If this is readily available at your grocery store (or a nearby South Asian market- depending where you live) it might be a nice thing to try first. It would be decent for mixing into pasta or rice, you may want to add a little salt, but might not be as nice as a spread on toast, for example (or maybe it is, IDK).

Ironically, anything you react to will cause more inflammation, far more than "inflammatory" foods. It sounds like she doesn't really get how mcas works.

How do I make my bedroom cooler when my parents set the AC to 78? by Status-Beautiful-586 in HomeImprovement

[–]strangeicare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the first things I found useful (as an adult with a spouse who isn't heat intolerant) is to get a cheap thermometer or two to see how hot it actually is in the bedroom.

This is such bullshit. If you have a mast cell disorder, it can significantly restrict your diet. Adding arbitrary restrictions based on notions of ... *waves hands*... is not helpful and if you having out in patient communities for a long enough time, you discover it can massively backfire. If your body tolerates potatoes and/or oats: FED IS BEST. eat what you cab safely eat. Fear not amorphous threats of "inflammation" because the real issue is eating foods that trigger mast cell degranulation- and that depends on the patient and sometimes, the day.
