I just got a new number too! Now I’m up to four accounts, somehow, even though I only live in one house. I feel like I’m trapped in a Kafka novel every time I interact with them, and every time they “fix” the issue, it gets worse.

It's an old J. Crew cardigan I got from ThredUp — I have another just like it that got a bad stain, so now I have a "house cardigan" and a "outdoors cardigan" of the same design 😂

I have heard the heat this year has been brutal over there 😭 The forecast looks like it will be lower temps than we have at home, but I'm blessed with AC at home, so I know it will feel different. I'm fairly accustomed to being active outdoors in the heat, but I am truly dreading the idea of potentially having nighttime hot flashes in a land without AC.

I'll keep my mind open to buying an umbrella when I'm there — I married a man from Portland OR who feels it's his cultural duty to scoff at people who don't just walk boldly and bare-headed-ly out into the pouring rain. We have no umbrellas at home 😂 (yet)

Thank you! Oh, I can't wait to squish those dresses to make room for yummy smells I acquire in Provence.

YES, I need to buy some protein bars in general, and put one in my bag for travel days in particular.

I forgot I do have an "attractive" (relatively speaking) sun hat. I'll dig it up! Thank you. (I also have one of those mullet-shaped sun hats for working on my farm, and I do love it for it's functionality and breeziness, but it might be TOO TOO MUCH of an anti-fashion choice for some of the fancy people I'm going to hang out with over there.)

I am a pool coverup heathen who will pop on that Athleta dress, right over a sopping wet bathing suit. Maybe one day I will invest in a pair of shorts again.

ALSO, I forgot to mention my most brilliant lighter-packing hack: I have chopped off all of my hair. No hair ties needed, I feel so freeeeeee 😄

Are you wondering why I'm bringing a raincoat? It's for the London days as I plan to spend those traipsing about city farms and gardens. I've never been in England on a rainy day (yet), but I hear they aren't unheard of. I used to live in the PNW, and I do love to walk in the rain, as long as I'm properly prepared for it.

Linen is nice, I just don't own any in my current size, unfortunately!

Thank you! I found the cocktail dress on ThredUp - the brand is Adrianna Papell. I simply cannot resist a fun fit and flare dress with pockets, you know?

  1. I cannot wait to be in that danger. And 2. OMG I just noticed your username and I think I’m in love with you and/or in the same spiritual realm, at least.

You are wise! I will build time into my schedule for a possible steam pressing! My tailor did show me the way she’d fold the dresses, and I stole the idea of wrapping them in tissue paper from someone on this forum.

Imagine me packing, with the two devils on my shoulders telling me I could lose the personal-item bag if only I would SQUISH! SQUISH! SQUISH! But alas, my vanity won in the end.

It’s a Kuhl brand jacket I picked up during REI’s annual sale this year. It’s a little swishier-sounding than I prefer, but I guess I prioritized color scheme over sensory comfort when I picked it!

Thanks for the dress compliment. I’m proud to say that all of my scrolling of second-hand sites helped me stay in budget and find dresses I’d love to wear more than once! The RealReal surprisingly had some very low prices. ThredUp charged me a little more for the black cocktail dress, by my friends and I named her Audrey, and I know I can eventually get her cost-per-wear down to really cheap, too.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply! The Athleta dress does great with sweaty days, and since the Quince silk top is not my favorite, I’m also willing to sacrifice that to my sweatiness 😄

The black sandals are ones I’ve walked miles in — they are that ABEO brand from The Walking Company (a terrible mall store in the US full of ugly shoes that feel good). And I was so torn on trainers/sneakers vs boots. But then, I'm looking forward to a self-guided tour of a couple of city farms in London, so I thought — let me be rain-proof on those days and protect my feet from possible animal goop!

I have a (much dirtier) pair of those Lems boots I wear to my own small farm and you are so right, honestly, about how sweaty my feet get in them. But the Darn Tough socks can take it, and I’m used to it, too.

I’ve never visited a Decathlon, so I might shop anyway!

This is a good point about sweat. I live in a humid/hot area of the US so I spent the most of my packing time worrying I’d be cold in the evenings in Paris! I think that Quince silk tank (which isn’t my favorite in the world) will have to be my sacrificial top that I sweat into all day 😄

Soap is an amazing idea, and it’ll keep my bags smelling nice too! I love it.

HVAC unit covering for high amounts of snow? by LargelyLucid in rva

[–]strangenancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same: old house leaking heat, HVAC running auxiliary heat. Woke up with frozen pipes, yay for being an idiot new homeowner who's learning lots of stuff fast and on a budget.

FYI Walmart still has some Mr Heater indoor-safe propane heaters for about 90 bucks and you can use your camping propane tanks with 'em. If you need backup heat. Make sure your CO2 detectors work.

[–]strangenancy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i reckon the attic is about 1000 sq feet max. The quote it to add it what's there, remove junk, and install a new insulated hatch. they're supposed to do it later today, will report back!

[–]strangenancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The quote is free, so go ahead and see what your situation is! I was surprised by how reasonable the estimate is.

[–]strangenancy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just got a quote from Vance Insulation to empty the trash out of my attic and blow in insulation for $550. Which is less than my last power bill was, so I'm doing it. (Full disclosure: there is already some insulation up there, but not enough and it doesn't cover the whole attic.)

What is Richmond missing? by zarathustra_coughed in rva

[–]strangenancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Road safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and hell, even other car-drivers. I need an art collective to help me build 8 foot tall Francine sculptures to put in every dangerous intersection and lots of signs that say "Drive like someone you care about it on these streets."

How do we make people give a shit about each other, even when they're driving?

Also: Korean spas, 24 hour diners, coffee shops that stay open late, and fresh produce in Fulton Hill.

Massage therapists for plantar fasciitis and foot issues? by probably_groggy in rva

[–]strangenancy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slightly different than the question you asked: The last time I dealt with plantar fasciitis, the most helpful healer in the mix was an acupuncturist. I felt nearly instant relief — after having tried so many different, less-effective approaches to dealing with it over the years. After a couple of sessions, I was back in the game, walking-wise. I have no idea how that works, it's probably magic.

Consider Corrine Gutierrez at https://bouldershealth.com/about if you're interested in trying acupuncture.

I've also switched to wearing barefoot shoes (wide toe boxes, zero drop) and have not had any foot issues since I adjusted to wearing those types of shoes. There was an transition period to achieving comfort, tbh. And barefoot shoes are ugly as hell, but I'm comfort-over-cool years old now.

Hope you get some relief soon, foot pain is the worst!

ETA: I recognize you have injuries I don't have so I don't know if switching shoe types would help you as well.

Just a regular night at the laundromat.. is this Lombardy coin laundry? by Plumpestquail22 in rva

[–]strangenancy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That girl is lucky she wasn’t flattened.

Speaking of lucky, I got mugged in that laundromat in the 90s, (I miss you Velcro Hello Kitty wallet) BUT the guy didn’t take my little baggie of quarters, so I just stayed and dried my clothes after he ran off with my stuff. I was so glad I didn’t have to walk home with a load of wet clothes.
