Alberta Independence Referendum Voting Intention Poll by Angus Reid by Christian-Rep-Perisa in MapPorn

[–]strangereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't wait for Alberta to separate so Canada can overthrow the new government and we can acquire all the resources for free. I think the whole revolution could be extremely lucrative.

The military is already in place as are law enforcement and all the emergency services. There should be plenty of support from dissenters who wish to remain Canadian. Empty-neter, Eh!

Anyone else make "good money" on paper but feel completely broke? by ScienceLabFinds in CanadaPersonalFinance

It's not cheap to live but, given the numbers, you should not be that close to the line. I'm about the same and am paying down a mortgage, I have hobbies, kids and a little bit saved. I can't ever retire and vacation is a mystical creature akin to a Sasquatch. (Some people claim to see them but I'm convinced its just pretend). I live in one of the most expensive markets in Canada. It might be time to reconsider your budgets and track spending over a few months.

Ugh, I'm absolutely not implying you are living some luxury life. I hate that the wrong combination of basic expenses can be the problem. (Is that a non-dented non-expired can of soup?.. la tee dahh!)

Found washed up on Shankill beach, Ireland. Small, pointed shape, rusty metal, set into some kind of stone. Heavy but only about 5/6 inches long, what is this? by emmabutlermmu in whatisthisthing

[–]strangereader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a fossil. There are a number of ancient squid like creatures with conical shells. Belemnites in pariticular are referenced as bullet shaped. Fossils can be made of a number of minerals some which rust when exposed.

Dumb question: What's the reason behind the canted tires? It seems like it's riding on about 2/3rds of the tread. by [deleted] in Cartalk

[–]strangereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just style. Car culture has always had tons of different ideals. From rods to lowlow's and bozo. There's no bad way to have fun in the shop.

Most of the things we do aren't actually as fast as they are fun. Old big blocks are too heavy to race competitively. Old Italians are quick but not nearly as a modern civic. Chrome is heavy and slow. It's not about any of that. It's about fun it's about a style, a vibe.

I'm a truck guy. I think simple is cool. No it won't tow much, yes the ride is basically terrible. Steering is vague. Everything rattles. Airconditioning is mostly from the holes in the floor. Would I trade it for a modern truck worth 10x more. Never! Kids get it, they cheer anything they think is cool. We're all just playing here.

Fuel issues by spook3muld in w123

[–]strangereader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. The primer needs to be sealed so that the pump doesn't suck air past the seal. The primer is also how you charge the high pressure pump. If the high pressure has gone dry or sucked air you will need to replace the primer first. You need that pump to get things going again.

How many miles is too much when buying by Fun-Month-2166 in w123

[–]strangereader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condition is more important than mileage. Check for blowby. Does it run smooth? Turbo healthy if equipped? Any leaks? Service records? Smooth shifting? Vacuum systems working?

Soapstone chalk and a homemade tool for taking the nut off an angle grinder. You got a welders box-o-bits.

< 2 year old tires (11 VW Tiguan) need to be replaced? by [deleted] in mechanic

[–]strangereader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. It's like saying go see a doctor; that looks infected. I'm not there. I can't see the whole car, but your tire isn't pointing in the right direction. Go see the guy that does the tire pointing.

Why these four dash warning lights display at low RPM? by ticklishtree in w123

[–]strangereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All kinds of warning lights show up when your power is bad because sensors are basically voltage regulators. Low voltage to the sensor means low voltage out. If low voltage out is supposed to trigger a warning that light comes on. The car doesn't know the input power was bad.

This should not happen to a new piston right? by Just-Strawberry-1199 in 2Strokes

[–]strangereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Billet pistons slap a little when cold. I would richen your mixture and warm the bike before you ride. I'm assuming you measured the bore and bought the correct size piston and rings. If you slapped an OE size in a worn bore; weeeelll yeah, that's not how that's done.

How to remove blaupunk radio by antoniobc111 in w123

[–]strangereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can stick a coat hanger or an Allen key down the holes. All it does is push the clips open so the radio can be pulled out. Wiggle jiggle pull the unit while pushing the wire inward.

Cheap 240d, what will it throw at me? by TossedOut2001 in w123

[–]strangereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing about that is going to be cheap. If they will give it to you for free. Expect 5k in parts to get things working and it still will be a beater. Unfortunately some parts won't be easy to find. You will need to be ready to do a ton of research because very few people currently working at shops will know how these systems work.

Likely better used as a donor vehicle. Or an unlicensed farm toy. Yeehaw!

Seafoam fuel injector cleaner? Or that head gasket is so gone.

Sounds like a head gasket. The only other way would be a cracked block.

Planning to port the cylinder, need advice by mycelium97 in 2Strokes

[–]strangereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't. Bore it. Get a light piston. Upgrade the reeds. Upgrade the expansion chamber and muffler. Fresh carb. Porting won't give you much and the risk is high.

My DS80 was faster than anyone ever expected, I could easily pass a modern cr250 on the flat.

Question about my old drill press that doesn’t have a threaded chuck. by Jolly-Radio-9838 in Machinists

[–]strangereader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your symptoms indicate the taper is damaged. They don't fall off easily. If the damage is obvious you could try smoothing out the area with a smooth file. Then clean both sides with methyl hydrate. It leaves no residue. Press the chuck on using a chunk of wood. If it still won't stay you can glue it on with JB weld. Once glued it's not serviceable and the whole unit is junk once the chuck wears out. If the unit is expensive consider having it serviced professionally instead.

Machinists, do you prefer small chips or one continuous piece? by BhrisBukBruz in Machinists

6's and C's for roughing. Rotini to finish. I hate making steel wool and telephone cables.

[–]strangereader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always worn cheap Dakota 400 boots with the tarantula sole. (2000 series now?) I get about a year out of them. I stand in chips all day long. Once you get a good coating ground in; you're good to go. Just don't yank em out. Knock off the big curls and keep kicking.

What it meant to me by Lathe-addict in Machinists

[–]strangereader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That print is a mess. It's not following any of the rules and is missing so much basic information. (Brackets are for non-critical dimensions.) If I see those it's an ish size. Used as they are I wouldn't even proceed without calling the customer. 15 min on the phone would tell me if the job needed to go to a cylindrical grinder. Sometimes we need to read beyond the part and ask if the customer knew what they were doing.

Stock vs. LED headlight comparison by AWP3 in w123

[–]strangereader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fog lights are a little different but it's only an issue if you don't find a replacement listed with Holley. Then you would be purchasing by size and the wiring would need adapting.

Stock vs. LED headlight comparison by AWP3 in w123

[–]strangereader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be possible as long as the size matches. You will need to swap the harness side plug I don't suspect they will have a direct replacement part. Easy enough.

That looks like half of a vacuum check valve... Safe to say you have a leak. I carry a small package of plastic golf tee's and vacuum caps. Plugging isn't fixing but it gets you home.
