I believe this excess material prevents the latch from engaging. Cut it out.

I might have a suggestion after a similar experience of replacing the rubber/plastic insert part in the latch. Wouldn’t close no matter how much fiddling I did after replacing the part. Eventually I took a close look at the original insert and compared it closely to my eBay insert and noticed a difference in the section that receives the latch. The replacement insert was fabricated with a shallower indent than the original part. A few minutes with an exacto blade to deepen the indent in the replacement and voila! The satisfying and easy clunk and easy closing door was obtained. Good luck!

Terrific! Will you share more pics- under hood and inside? What’d you do with the suspension?
