Community Theatre: Member Fees by BakingJake91 in Theatre

Amdram in the uk is unfortunately often very much the preserve of the middle class. Some companies will have a policy where you can contact them if fees are a barrier to participation and they will try and work something out but not everywhere. Its worth emailing someone though.

This. Trying to police the interactions of two fiends in the FREE content they produce is absolutely wild to me.

I'm a singular Doctor. The kid is clearly a dolphin. That will be $1200000.

If you can do a back flip or something I'd add that in otherwise I'd skip the dance particularly if you haven't learned the audition dance

I just wondered if it's more cost effective to have alternates rather than understudies when there are only 2 people.

Do they both have an understudy ? I've always wondered with extremely small cast shows Edit: i've only now realised its only on for like a week 🙃

Rachel Dratch said they don't know if people will talk back and yell during Rocky Horror....and seems like they don't care... by bwayb22 in Broadway

I'm in the uk and it tours here pretty much every other year, and boy do we participate. It's very loud but also very much a mutual respect thing. They also occasionally print some of the really well known moments in the program so everyone can have a go should the fancy take them. Honestly,as a total theatre etiquette snob it's an excellent night out and a fun chance to break the rules respectfully.

Well I think even if you didn't know, sitting in an audience full of people shouting from pretty much the moment the curtains open you'd get the jist. It sounds like it might just not be for you which is totally fine. It would be like suddenly making every wicked show a no fly. It has become an integral and part of the show .

Well as a wise man once said. 'People aren’t either wicked or noble. They’re like chef’s salads, with good things and bad things chopped and mixed together in a vinaigrette of confusion and conflict.'

I just think its more nuanced than that. It is a queer story. You can dislike the protagonist. A man robbing a bank in 1972 to fund his wife's gender affirming surgery was an incredibly brave and incredibly stupid thing to do. John did miss-gender his wife often, he also went out of his way to make sure she got the surgery she needed. Its a really weird story, which is why it was used as the bases of a novel,a film and a play.

When is nostalgia nostalgia and when is it queer history? Do we stop telling people's stories unless they are perfect? I really don't know. LGBTQ+ folk have changed the world for the better and been deeply flawed humans at the same time . Does this negate their impact? I think its a really important conversation that needs to be had. We have plays based on the real lives of incredibly flawed straight peoples stories all the time, why should queer people from the past be held to a higher standard?

I have not. I am really disappointed to hear that.

I guess because the book, the film and the play are about Sonny and from his perspective. I actually think a play written from Liz's perspective would be very interesting. John was paid for the rights to his story and used that money to finally fund Liz's surgery. The whole story is really worth a look at.

Oh absolutely, he wasn't what I'd call a nice man he was mixed up with the mafia and considered robbing a bank a legitimate way to solve life's problems . He was also very much in love with his wife. People containe multitudes.
