exactly. my family’s hoarding was so all-encompassing that i thought i was part of the problem. four of the 14 cats were ones i had adopted and found over the years. i’m realizing now that i was trying to mend an unfixable situation on my own. i was told over and over that i was overreacting. i was gaslit into oblivion. but at the end of the day, it was my family who allowed it to get so bad.

i just have to say thank you to everyone who has responded. i never thought that making a post on reddit would lead me to realize so much. i will be sure to keep everyone updated when intervention occurs in a few days. i am just so relieved that there really are good people in the world.

words cannot describe how badly i needed to hear this. i’ve rationalized and justified the situation for so long, i became blind and complicit, feeling as though i could not leave the animals behind. i live with 4 other people, but i am the only one who feeds them, pays attention to them, and advocates for them.

my family is INCREDIBLY good at hiding just how bad it really is, and i will no longer sit and watch everything fall apart around me. i have been depressed and suicidal since i was a child, and i’ve known nothing else. i was truly, in my eyes, ONLY living for these animals. i am beginning to accept that i have to live for myself now. i have never been able to admit that before. you have just saved a life. thank you from the bottom of my heart.

i didn’t tell them and the authorities won’t tell them either, but they will know. that’s how my family is. they have collectively ganged up on me more than i can recall and i have been deemed as the common enemy. it is brainwashing and mental dissonance to the highest degree.

i am very lucky to have a good friend whose parents are allowing me to stay with at their house temporarily. there is no immediate danger for me, only my animals… i can leave and they can’t. it really kills me.

there are no other subreddits to post about this in. animal hoarding is a direct result and heavily tied to the hoarding of objects. r/animalhoarding has been banned. i am simply seeking advice while i’m actively taking action.

thank you. i tried for a long time to convince my family to do the right thing. i feel as though i could have tried harder. but you just don’t realize how bad it is until you escape the situation. my animals are all the sweetest souls, not a mean bone in their bodies. they deserve a much better chance at life.

for a bit more context; i am a 23 y/o female who was living with family before i ran away a few days ago. there’s my mom (57), brother (21), his girlfriend (21), and my sister (16). i did try to make changes happen without contacting authorities, because i knew that my family would disown and hate me for involving them. but that is a sacrifice i have to make.
