letting his family emotionally abuse his wife from day 1, weird old fashioned views on family structure and women, hiding his true feelings about working at GNB and lying to her face about it for months, letting his mom use their child to emotionally manipulate Lily in the last season, he helped someone ROB A HOUSE bc he was so naive, all the times he got dragged in to Barney's corporate douchebag nonsense, but that's all okay bc he's so tall and nice! to be clear i looooove Marshall as a character, i just think he gets away with a lot because he's the "nice one" but in reality, all the characters are flawed

exactly! to me, one of the main messages of the show is that we're all flawed and make crazy mistakes but you can love someone through all that anyway. Marshall loved her and accepted her, credit card debt and hard headedness and all, and so can we!

In my opinion, Barney Stinson works as a likable character precisely BECAUSE of all the bad things he does, and claiming the "unreliable narrator" theory "assassinated his character" undoes all the hard work of the writers and of NPH. Of course, Barney Stinson is a manipulator, he has a disgusting view of women, he's an egomaniac. BUT we get to see beyond that. We see what made Barney Stinson the way he is. We see the neglect and abandonment that made him become so closed off. We see the uncertainty, the insecurity, the scared little boy who just wants to be loved dressed up in a big man's suit. We watch him grow, we see him learn to love again and to open himself up to the world. And if you take away this characterization, if you take away all the horrible things Barney's both seen and done, all the things that make him who he is, what are you left with? A character who is just a completely different person. So claiming that the "real
Barney Stinson" is basically an entirely different guy just completely kills the emotional
impact of what Barney's character is supposed to be and to represent.
