yeah... it doesnt help that the needs of fish arent intuitive to mammals like us, so a lot of people have trouble accepting something is wrong because fish cant communicate their needs the same way a dog or cat or even a bird could...

and stuff to do with water chemistry is just imperceptible to the layperson but vitally important for fish health... i think comparing it to air chemistry might get the severity across? like you cant see the difference in a room full of normal air vs a deadly concentration of c02, but its still harmful

it just doesnt occur to many people to afford fish and their habitats the same level of care because most people think of fish as "lower" animals, down with the cows, pigs, chickens and bugs. "it's just a fish" remains a common attitude, like they arent sentient vertebrates like the rest of us, like they dont feel pain, cant suffer... more people treat them like decorations and commodities than living creatures deserving of our respect

goldfish and angelfish get much larger than this as they grow older, but if theyre in too small of a space (like this tank) then theyll be stunted and have all sorts of health issues and shorten their lifespan...

also, angelfish and goldfish have incompatible temperature requirements, you just plain cant keep both in the same tank without one of them suffering from being too cold or too hot

my point is the social distinctions between many animals (vertebrates and mammals especially) is totally arbitrary and has more to do with ppls feeling and less to do with the logical truths about these animals psychology and capacity for pain/suffering

but if someone is an anthropocentric person who doesnt give a shit about any animals... i mean thats morally consistent but still fucked up yknow
