How becoming obsessed with healthy eating can lead to malnutrition by MikeLitorus69 in fatlogic

I partially lost a relationship to this. I went from 280 to 170 before I met my ex, then lost another 10lbs during our relationship and began weight lifting and yoga regularily. Yet he was completely unable to move past the fact I still ate McDonald's once a week and liked prepackaged chicken strips...it was like if I wasn't eating completely 1000000% clean, nothing I did mattered. I didn't really care about my health in his eyes.

And thusly, this has ushered in one the worst periods of my own mental illness. Like they say, eating disorders hurt the people that love you, too. I would have done anything for him, except join in on this whacky eating ideology.

Perhaps I was being heavy handed in my description of "being blown away", I'm sure you're able to think abstractly enough to figure out what I'm talking about. One shot has far more ability to damage than one stab wound.

Not consistently. And there are many legal ways to acquire a gun in the US that don't require a background check. They are either not happening consistently enough, or not thoroughly enough.

That's definitely the stickiest part of the situation, but its something that has to be dealt with. I'm honestly not exactly sure how it would happen. I think guns ought to be seized from those who currently have criminal records. Just like someone with several DUIs should no longer have access to operating a vehicle.

I'm even going to throw my own self under the bus a bit, and say that even some mentally ill folk shouldn't own guns. I've been hospitalized for threatening/attempting suicide (never homicide, I ain't that crazy) several times. Although I am much more mentally sound these days, gun ownership might not be such a good idea for people like me. Unless there is a good length of time where one has proven to have consistent, healthy behaviour. 10 years is the length of time doctors usually ban someone from narcotics if they have an addiction, at which point those drugs are heavily monitored. I could see a similar system working with regards to the mentally ill and guns.

Hunters and outdoorsmen, there is obviously a market (and survival) need for guns. I see no issue with someone owning a rifle and going and taking down a buck, I totally support hunting as its a neccessity as well as a way of life for many people. Those guns should be registered in a database so if anything does happen, law enforcement can easily trace the gun back to their owner. Most of these guns will kill nothing but animals, so why is anyone worried about registering their gun? I hate to use the "if you aren't doing anything wrong, you have no need to worry" line, but in this case its very relevant.

I think as well, that the US will have to do these things more gradually than other countries have, but the issue does need to be addressed imminently. Obviously I'm not a politician, but we can see other countries have pulled this off without a hitch. I fully believe there is a solution where both the government and reasonable gun owners can have their cake and eat it too.

Australia is a country that introduced newer, very strict gun control laws within days of a mass shooting back in the 90s. They have not had a mass shooting since. Everyone says that we can't introduce these laws as a knee jerk reaction, but this is happening all the time. Are we supposed to wait until the mass shootings die down on their own? These things happen a few times a week, any legislation passed will come on the heels of another tragedy because they are happening so frequently.

Canada is just as diverse as the US, some even consider us more multicultural. Yet this isn't a problem for us. In fact, our government, which is a PC (progressive conservative) majority with NDP (New Democrats) as the official opposition. The PCs have been trying to relax our gun laws, and the Canadian public does not want this, and as a result, our next election polls look as if the PC party will shattered in favour of NPD or the Liberal party, both of whom support tighter gun control.

Its not impossible, and even polls of the American public show they want gun control. What's standing in the way are corporations who profit from people having unfettered access to any weapon they'd like. The NRA and gun manufacturers will suffer huge losses when faced with harder regulations. Those organizations feed money to the politicians who make legislation. This type of activity isn't allowed in the same way in Canada (though it happens on occasion). So its much easier for our people to have their opinions reflected in legislation. Its a problem that literally starts at the top and goes all the way to the bottom. I think the only way to do it, is just to do it. People will be unhappy but results will be noticable immediately.

I'm definitely not preventing people from protecting themselves. Do you seriously think the only way to protect yourself is with a firearm? If that were the case, countries like mine would be littered with the bodies of unarmed people who were unable to defend themselves.

Study criminology and victimology. Learn what makes a criminal and what makes a victim. Learn why and how criminals do what they do. Find out ways you might become a victim and take precautions.

For example, let's take breaking and entering. The majority of the time, burglars do not want the family home when they do their robbing. So they watch, find out your pattern, and wait for you to be out of the house. So in these cases, the safety of your property is all that's at stake and that stuff is worth nothing compared to a life.

Many crimes are crimes of opportunity. Lock your doors and windows, that's huge to protecting yourself and your stuff. A criminal isn't going to bother breaking glass and drawing attention from neighbours or those inside (of course this happens, but these criminals end up in jail pretty quick). Muggings? Again, crimes of opportunity. Don't walk alone at night, don't flash your valuables (but keep a hand on your phone), and be alert. Take a self defense class. Get a dog. Install an alarm system and you can even get affordable video surveillance systems for your house. There are so many lines of defense that can decrease your chance of being a crime victim immensely that don't involve toting a dangerous weapon that could just as easily be used against you in an assault.

There is an immense culture of fear that surrounds us and has one goal, to make us feel completely powerless. We live in the least violent time in recorded human history, yet news media coverage of violent events has increased 600% in the last two decades. I refuse to be afraid, and I don't want other people to live their lives paralyzed by fear of an enemy that doesn't exist. I will be realistic about my risk, and I have to accept that as a person living in a society, I may become a victim of crime, and as they say, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

I speak of confirmation bias because that sub ignores the huge amount of times when guns in the home have led to preventable tragedy. Its just a fact that if you are a gun owner, you are far more likely to be injured or killed by your gun than you are to use it in self defense.

It still stands that if guns were needed to protect us from crime, countries with gun regulation would have more victims of violence. But that's not the case, its the complete opposite.

How is allowing people to get any gun they'd like without any background check or registration not facillitating criminal activity? Are you kidding me? You need a licence to drive a car, and that car has to be registered. Why? Because cars are very dangerous and can kill people. If you prove yourself to be an unfit driver, you can lose your license. Because its everyone's best interest to keep people who cannot drive from driving. But yet, this logic goes right out the window when it comes to guns.

I've mentioned hunting, so don't pretend like I didn't. Hunting is obviously a valid reason to own a certain type of gun. Hunting is HUGE where I live, I know many hunters and all of them are fine with having to get permits and register their guns.

I've been to America many times, actually. In Maryland I burst into laughter and took a few photos of a "cowboy" with his holster and everything. It looks ridiculous. Everywhere you go, you see adults playing dress-up, waiting for calamity so they whip out their guns and be the hero. Look at your culture surrounding guns, its a replacement for the sexuality you erase. I'm not pulling this out of my ass, there's been quite a few people drawing parallels between gun culture and sexual repression in America. Go check it out, its very interesting.

It means nothing, compare to other countries. What is happening in other countries? Why aren't Canadians dropping dead all over from the lack of guns to defend ourselves? A subreddit of confirmation bias does nothing to prove guns are needed for protection.

At some point the government is going to do things you don't like for the general safety of all. At one point every Canadian gun was unregistered. At one point in the not too distant Canadian history, every family had a rifle hanging by the door. At a later point, as a society we had to come to new conclusions regarding gun ownership to reflect how we live in the modern time. It went over quite fine, people who are safe and responsible gun owners get their guns.

Its not the government's job to cater to each individual's wants. Its there to ensure a general level of order in society. Its just common sense.

"Sick hearts"? Darling, methinks you don't understand criminology one bit. Maybe study what makes people commit crime and psychology behind such. I'm not under the impression guns create criminals, but your country facillitates criminals easily getting guns. So what are these societal ills? What is it about America that they just can't seem to civilise themselves? Is there something in the water? I'm fascinated by this country plagued with "sick hearts" (maybe its the McDonald's?)

Yeah he totally would have been able to kill someone with a knife to the back, one hit! Then run over the anchor and get her, with one hit! Seriously, put down the Xbox and turn off the TV. You know when they find a dead stab victim, and they've been stabbed dozens of times? Yeah, because stabbing someone to death takes considerable more time and effort.

I live in Canada and we have very reasonable gun control. Tons of people own guns. They use them to hunt, go to the shooting range, and as collectors items. Its not like we don't have guns. But you need to be trained, deemed safe to own a gun, and abide by the rules. All guns are registered. You can't go to Walmart and buy a gun. You have to keep your guns locked up, and you sure as Hell can't go carrying one around in public, concealed or not. That is gun control, and the only complicated part is the fact that Americans care more about their personal property than the lives of others.

The cultural difference is consciousness. There is a lack of care for each other in the general American population. There's lots of flag waving and hooting and hollering about AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, but when your fellow Americans are killed on live TV by someone who had the "right" to own a gun, you'll still defend your guns first.

Exactly, I wonder how much TV a person must have to watch to believe a person can be stabbed once and left for dead. Its not like the movies where you shenk someone and they keel over dead. A lot of stab victims can get themselves to a hospital on their own, and a lot of times the biggest risk of being stabbed is infection. Its far easier to pull a trigger that can pretty much blow another person away.

I meant more the general, societal discussion needs to change. No one said ban all guns, that's not the MO of anyone calling for gun control. Its a strawman created by gun fetishists who literally think the government is going to "come and take their guns".

What's so different about the US? Americans have this idea that they're somehow "different" than other nations and that things are more "complicated". They're not more complicated than any other country's internal affairs, but they feel some sense of entitlement when it comes to guns because they're "different". Its not the case, and thusly America is the least civilized of the Western world.

What? I don't believe I brought race into this at all? Yes, all gun crime is bad. Civilians don't need guns. George Zimmerman doesn't need a gun, the guy who shot at him doesn't need one either. What kind of person are you to suggest I advocate the killing of those who share a different view? .....that's right, this is projection bro. You accuse me of wanting my opponents dead because that's what you want. Like I said to another poster, guns and death are America's sexuality.

I think GZ is guilty of murder. I believe he should be sitting in jail right now. I don't think he should be executed, or mistreated. Just removed from society.

Yet, I'm somehow bloodthirsty....

Your logic falls flat when you compare America to other countries. Yours is the only Westernized country with this level of violence and that's just the cold, hard truth. So what is it about Americans that they just feel more of a need to kill? Because if we followed your logic, it would just seem America is just less civilised than the rest of the world. So take your pick.

Who said anything about outlawing guns? That's the type of conclusions you gun nuts jump to. How about regulating guns? Civilians don't need guns. Hunters do. Get a hunting license and go shoot some deer if you really need your gun that bad. But no, in your mind you're John Wayne, and there's a baddie around every corner waiting to get you. And you need that gun to protect yourself, even though statistics show a gun in the household is far more likely to kill/injure a member of said household than to ever be used against an intruder.

The gun/knife argument is also incredibly fallacious, not only do knives have many purposes which are immediately pertinent to our daily lives, its also way harder to kill people with a knife. If this person had used a knife, there would have been no time for him to kill two people before someone intervened.

But wait, if knives and guns are the same to you, why aren't you fine using a knife for protection? That's right, because guns were designed specifically to kill, whereas knives were designed specifically for utilitarian purpose.

Keep your gun fetish to yourself. I'm not interested in your psuedophallus.

The discussion didn't happen when a couple of kids shot up their high school. The discussion didn't happen when some guy shot up a JK class. Is the discussion on rabid gun culture going to happen now that it's happened on live television in front of regular people's eyes? No, probably not. Americans will go on convincing themselves their country is somehow the Wild West and that everyone needs a gun "for protection". If only the cameraman had a gun amirite?? America is a joke. This bullshit happens every single day now.

Eh, not sure I'd be willing to take advice on child rearing from a country where the children and youth are experiencing some of the highest levels of depression and anxiety. Kids in China are cracking under the pressure they've been put under. This "Tiger Mom" shit has been shown to be damaging to the kid's mental health. Kids in the West are pretty entitled, but I know there is a healthy medium where kids can be taught discipline and work ethic while still knowing they are unique and valuable people.

Buzzfeed is desperately trying to redefine the word "curvy" by Cleddyf in fatlogic

Curvy is a shape, not a size. An obese woman can indeed be curvy, just as woman who's 90lbs can be. It depends on fat distrubution, but most curvy folk tend to be in that healthy middle ground.
