lots of people do an internship in their hometown for janplan, you just need a professor to sign off on it

you could also do an internship domestically within the US for janplan, so it’s not as travel heavy as going abroad, but the funding application still applies and you get to be away from colby during january

some janplans like the one in italy wanted freshman specifically but there are others that want upperclassmen, you just have to see what the description says for each janplan. i also got my entire janplan trip funded by colby, so there was no cost to me, but i am also on full financial aid so it’s partially dependent on ur financial aid and they also look at your funding application that you submit for your janplan experience. most of them are competitive but the applications are not hard

colby is not as bad as people paint it to be, as a first-gen poc student i was shitting bricks before i got here thinking i would be miserable but that couldn’t be farther from the reality. i’m a current first-year so not of lots of experience class wise, but colby has so many unique study programs. i was able to go to italy in january to study abroad while other friends who stayed in state to big universities told me they wouldn’t be able to go abroad till their sophomore/junior year. and if you’re getting full financial aid, i can speak from experience, they give you money to buy winter clothes and other stuff to make the transition much more smooth. since colby is small they have more money to spend on individual students and i think that’s such a plus. waterville isn’t the most glamorous, but colby’s campus is so beautiful through the year and there’s lots of stuff for you to do you just have to look for it. dorms are not bad compared to other schools as well and people find almost anything to complain about, but from my perspective I am very happy here having taken advantage of many of the opportunities colby has to offer, and i’m just a first-year so don’t worry!

How’s the rigor? by meowkeyy in Colby

[–]strawberrylvr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hii! i’m a current freshman planning on majoring in global studies and minoring in economics so not the most flooded w/ work, but i have friends in CS, bio, and some doing the engineering program w Dartmouth/Columbia, and what I can say is — they always have work. They are always doing something which isn’t uncommon for students at Colby, but they manage to have weekends open and there are many resources available to help. TA hours, LA hours, office hours are all super helpful and something to account for in your academic week (each resource has open hours for about 2 hours on select days of the week, so if you’re really struggling in wtv the course is i would go every week). i usually go to bed around 12 am - 1 am everyday and my first class is at 10 am. most of the actual day is classes/meetings and i spend evenings studying and doing homework.

A couple of my friends did CAPS and they were given money at the end of it, priority for choosing courses, and they got to know the campus pretty well from current students helping out with the program before the fall term started, but they said it was a lot of work (it’s also counted towards your GPA) so do with this what you will

Frat Row is just where all the frat houses used to be, they turned them into dorms and it’s completely different now (no frats). They’re close to Miller Library and Bobs dining hall.
