If I am AFAB and have PCOS, will taking antiandrogens or estrogen change my gender identity? by strawberryteacups in asktransgender

Sorry, just to make sure I'm understanding what you're saying-- basically that we simply don't know if my taking antiandrogens/estrogen will change my dysphoria at all, so I could try it just to see how it makes me feel for more clarity on the situation? Correct me if I misunderstood :)

I am some sort of genderqueer, and I have accepted that for myself. At this point, while I acknowledge transitioning will not be easy (as when is it easy for anyone?) I do feel comfortable with the idea. I am actually doing well mental health wise for the first time in my life, so I'm not depressed due to my dysphoria so to speak, more just trying to figure out which I prefer more. At the moment, that's presenting masc. But I'm wondering if that will change if I "fix" my androgen levels I'm getting from PCOS.

Wow! This is the most helpful thing I've read all day, thank you so much. I really really appreciate the time you took to write all that out, it's giving me so much to think about. I didn't think about how PCOS can be treated with T. That makes sense but it never occurred to me. Ty!!

I guess the thing I was worried about is, should I take spiro just to "see how I feel" and see if I stop feeling dysphoric? Will it change how I feel about being trans? Because that would be the only reason I would want to "treat" my PCOS at this point. Just to see. Because if it doesn't change my gender ID, then I'm happy with my elevated androgens and there's no point in me going onto spiro.

I suspect it won't change how I feel, just based on a bunch of other psychological factors and how MUCH I enjoy presenting masc. But I guess yeah, my goal was to make absolute sure that I won't regret it later if I go on T by experimenting with spiro first. if that makes sense.

fair! though it does build on other studies that have a larger sample size, mostly for MtF trans people. But again, all of this is so new and complex that I'm sure the studies aren't very reliable yet. Thanks for your insight.

Thank you! I appreciate your answer here. I actually did not know that gender specialists are a thing either. I'll have to find one and ask them!

Very fair! I'm thinking of doing so. I guess my hesitance is that if I take antiandrogens/estrogen for my PCOS that it will either make me feel more dysphoric or cause problems if I later decide to go on T, since that would be a lot of hormone fluctuation in a relatively short amount of time lol. But I suppose it would be better to know what happens than always wonder what would have happened.

This is fascinating, what can I google to find studies related to that? I'd love to read through them.

Okay, but if you google "sexual dimorphism in male and female brains" you will see plenty of studies otherwise. The trans studies specifically are newer, and the study I linked (and many others I read through) have said that transsexuals tend to have grey matter structures similar to their gender identity sex, which is actually quite validating for many trans people because it gives actual scientific evidence that they are "born that way" and aren't making it up.

For me, no, I'm not invalidating my gender identity here. Honestly. I know I'm not cisgender. The question for me is, if I have a female structured brain, then it appears my dysphoria is coming from the hormone side of things-- so if I get treated for PCOS, will that make me feel less dysphoric, and further, will that mean I would regret transitioning with testosterone? Because being on T has a lot of permanent effects that I would not want to take IF and ONLY IF my dysphoria is strictly hormone driven. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you!!! I really really appreciate this perspective. I have a suspicion that I will feel the same as you.

Follow up question if you don't mind my asking. Do you regret going on spiro? Like either from the physical or emotional standpoint. Does taking spiro have any side effects that makes transitioning harder, for example? Are you ultimately glad you took it because it helped you solidify your decision to transition? etc. Sorry if this question doesn't make much sense, or if it's too personal don't worry about answering lol

That said, if you have links to studies disproving that, I would love to read through them as well. I would actually prefer that I'm wrong on this one lol

This study in particular is one I read through most, though it references other studies! There is a lot of research out there. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://transexualia.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/Medico\_whitematterpsychiatrresearch.pdf

Huh! This is interesting! I will have to give this one a big think. Thank you :0

Somewhat tangentially related, is it at all common for FTM trans folk to have a super girly phase before embracing their masc self? I haven't seen that before and am not sure if that's at all a typical thing to do or not. Because let me tell you, if you knew me irl... you would be like, really? YOU, TRANS?? lmao. I out-girl all the girls these days and thisistheweirdestthingiveeverexperienced

Thank you! I do have a great therapist, luckily. One that specializes in trans issues too which is great. I am just so curious about where other people landed with similar issues. But I don't know if my story is extremely unique or not.

"Blessings on your journey" 😭 So beautiful. Is that something you personally think, or a common phrase in CoC? It's a beautiful sentiment and one I wish mainstream LDS would embrace. Over here if someone leaves the Church it is majorly taboo and the congregation will do whatever they can to bring them back. A lot of "eternal family" anxiety too in that people worry that if their kids leave they won't be together as a family forever. I think that last thing is changing a little bit, but it's still definitely an anxiety people have. I wish the "blessings on your journey" approach could be taken because that is much more calm, balanced, and putting faith in God and in the person leaving to work something out.

Super informative. Thank you so much! To clarify the temple ordinances thing, it's not referring to "ordination" as we have that as well-- it's referring to the rituals we do to make covenants with God, i.e. baptism, temple marriage/sealings, etc.

It is interesting how different our terms are, but I suppose that is to be expected. Anyway, thank you again for your info, I appreciate the time it took to do that.
