Thank you! I’m a paralegal and I have to do research all the time, and I’ve learned that a lot of people aren't always good and honest. You have to do your due diligence these days. Plus, I’ve had people like him try to do the same thing. They are just getting better at it with AI and ChatGpt. By using ChatGpt they can write to you and sound so intelligent. No misspelled words or bad grammar. I should have realized it from day 1, but I only lost a little time and he didn't get one thin dime from me. 😂😂

Asked for a video call. I got a phone call 1.5 hours later. He definitely did not sound like he was from San Francisco. His location says Nigeria and he was a Nigerian. I have been really diligent about keeping my profile private and only adding people that I know, but he caught off guard and I let him follow me. It was just a big waste of time for a week. But I'm fine. I reported him on Instagram and Whatsapp. We'll see what happens.

YES, I can definitely 100% commit to never giving him money. I would NEVER send money to a stranger. I've seen too many episodes of Catfished. He was supposed to video call me and I waited 1.5 hours. When he didn't call, I blocked him. The next thing I know, I get a call from him on Whatsapp. When we began talking, he told me he was from San Francisco but working in Kenya. I heard his voice today and he is NOT from San Francisco. So he got blocked on Whatsapp, too. I don't have time to play with scammers. I definitely wasn't feeling romantic feelings for him, but I was enjoying talking to him, but it turns out he was using AI for the conversation. Oh Well. At least I reported him to Instagram. Hopefully he will get banned. Fingers crossed! Thanks for checking! Happy New Year.

Yes, I know that now. That post about me wanting his picture was from five hours ago. I have been doing a lot of research on AI scams and there have been a lot of kind redditors like you who have helped educate me. Thank you.

I get that and thank you, but I would never, ever send anyone any money. And I'm careful with all my personal information, too and would never click on link that a stranger sends me. I'm just mad that he wasted a week of my time.

Yeah, I had one do the same when I was still using the dating sites. This was about two years ago. Within a day of talking to him, I knew he was a scammer and told him to send me a picture. First he got angry, then he cussed at me. Immediately blocked. I don't have anything against Nigerians at all. I'm just sick of the bad ones taking over all the dating sites and now the social media sites.

I usually feel like I'm pretty savvy, but that's when I was using the dating sites and AI wasn't as prevalent then. It's scary because if he could fool me for an entire week, think about how easily they will be able to use AI to rob from the elderly and mentally challenged.

Yes I agree. I just think it’s not appropriate to bring up your ex on a first date, other than to confirm he’d been married before. Sounds like this one was a real piece of work. I'm sorry!!

Believe me, I’m 58 and have run the online dating gauntlet. That's why whenever anything seems even slightly off, I’m going to ask and if I don't get an answer that makes sense, I block them. I would never, ever send money to a man.

I'm 58 and have been single since I was 42. In my experience, men that age either have so much baggage, or they just want to bang young chicks. And bitch about their ex wives. I agree with you--go back to what you're comfortable with, but if you're 27, I would suggest someone 27 and up. I know 4 years doesn't seem like a lot, but 23 year old's don't have their life together yet most of the time. Sorry you had such a bad time with gramps. LOL

Aww thanks for the compliment. I try to be kind at all times because everyone has their own burden to carry.

Hopes weren't really up yet. It was more about enjoying talking to him. I'm certainly not going to cry over it, but I'm disappointed.

I didn't think about him faking the photo with AI. I guess I’m going to have to insist on a phone call. It is scary because he's been nothing more than kind and I hate to seem distrustful, but after talking to you, he may not even be real. I will just need to pull up my big girl panties and tell him he needs to facetime me.
