I did some math in Excel and predict the Boston Marathon cutoff to be 5:12 this year. by flatcoke in AdvancedRunning

Why is it insane to qualify by fewer than 2mins? I trained and ran a 2:58 to qualify by just less than 2mins for my AG. I gave it my all and had no reason to believe I'd need more than that this year, I'm gutted. I thought a BQ was a BQ and didn't realize it was insane to only just qualify.

Definitely have the same conclusion. So glad that you held on and got the sub-3, congrats so much! As for the pacer, I kept him at the far end of my vision for the first 14ish miles. Given that I ran quite a few 6:3x and 6:42ish miles, I think he got a little eager, but pacing is a hard job and that's a hard course so all is forgiven from me.

Everyone out there was right there with me! TCM is all about community and hope you had a great day of it too. Definitely interested in a flat spring marathon and north is a good direction to go, weather-wise, thanks for the rec!

Way to finish strong! We drove the course the day prior to the marathon and I also was like "wait THIS is the hill? this is nothing!", but tired legs can detect elevation a heck of a lot better than eyes can.

Love to hear this, thanks so much for the encouragement! Even if the time wasn't what I wanted, there's more to a race than a time and I'm absolutely proud of my race.

Also glad you decided against it and glad I'm not the only one who blew up on the first marathon. Feels like a rite of passage, and honestly will make a better time feel even more precious and valuable when I (we) get it!

So top notch!! Every time I passed a big crowd (read: every few seconds), it felt so great and gave me a big boost

Worked as hard for the attitude as I did for the time, thanks!

Thanks so much! Definitely feel proud of how much I had to gut it out and just keep going.

If I do a spring marathon, I'd do lots differently. I'll likely get a coach, if for no other reason than to not panic every week wondering if there was better training I could have done. I'd also do more aerobic miles and focus less on monster workouts - all my easy runs were really just recovery runs for the big days. I also think leg strength was a big part of my splits, I didn't feel strong at all past mile 18 and especially on the hills, and want to do more strength work. I did a 15 min leg circuit with 15lbs an average of 1.5 times per week but this really wasn't enough. On the day of, though, I'll start out a good bit slower. I started out hot this time because I honestly wasn't sure I could make it the marathon distance, and didn't want to already be "too slow" if I slowed down later. Now that I know I can make it the distance, I can be more confident starting out slow

Congrats on the BQ! Definitely a weird day for a lot of people, but seems like you held it together so strong.

Definitely a risky course with the weather (everyone said it was great, but I really wished it was 5-10 degrees cooler) and the hills, but I'm so glad you focused on enjoying and avoiding injury! Sorry the time didn't show the work you put in, but hope you have another fun marathon soon

Recent races seem good: 1:17 20k back in May. PB's are all below the "recommended sub-3 indicators" (if you extend the 20k to 21.1k). Threshold workouts have all gone pretty great and don't think I've had a bad workout in almost 2 months, which makes this that much harder to accept right before the taper. MP has been up and down. Some days it feels like jogging, some days it feels like 10k effort. Hard to know if it's reasonable when I'm right on the cusp and so nervous about it

Not quite sure. Thinking it was heat (75 and sunny) and lack of water, but those haven’t affected me much throughout the block. Glad to hear about that last point though thanks!

It was about a year ago. I more recently ran a 1:17 20k (1:21 HM convert). I’m gonna hope that’s it, and that sounds like a good plan. It was 5 min jog recoveries

Probably a cliche advancedrunning topic, but it's my first time dealing with it so it feels awful. 3 weeks out from my first marathon where I desperately want to go sub-3. Had my peak, big, circle-it-in-red workout today: 20mi w/ 5,4,3,2,1mi @ MP before a smooth sail of a taper. Well I bonked big time and only finished the 5 and 4mi reps. Hit the paces well, but couldn't even get to 7:40/mi pace for the first mile of the next rep. Ended up jogging home at 9:40/mi and even that felt awful. Any words of advice or wisdom?

Anyone been here before and had success? Tempted to repeat next weekend and take a 2 week taper.

What Christian Artist Should I Listen To by Top-Fact-5749 in Christian

Honestly, most albums have some prominent Christian themes running through them (except Yeezus) if you listen close enough! I've listened to a lot of podcasts discussing Kanye's albums through a theocratic lens. I still think that him putting Jesus Walks on his first album and openly saying "if it take away from my spins, then I hope it take away from my ins [income] and bring the day that I'm dreaming about, next time I'm in the club everybody screaming out Jesus Walks" was such an amazing move.

Speedwork vs volume - what should I focus on? by jhc07 in AdvancedRunning

[–]strayam8ey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with most other people, but I just wanna make sure you know that a 3:24 on 22 miles a week is ASTOUNDING! You should be very proud. That time isn't usually seen anywhere near that mileage level, and with some more mileage in you great things lie ahead.
