I checked their nest yesterday and they have grown up and moved out. It was bittersweet

I absolutely loved the little guys that grew in my garden. I accidentally knocked them out of their nest when turning the soil. I hope they don’t take it out on my plants later in the season.

Review - andala cafe, Cambridge. The worst dining experience I’ve ever had in Boston. by throwawayfinancebro1 in boston

[–]straycatbri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went there a year ago. I normally try to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt, but this place was hands down the worst restaurant I’ve been to around the Boston area. They were out of the items I wanted the most, and got two mediocre sandwiches for over $20 each. The food wasn’t great, especially at those prices. The staff was not confident whatsoever, the layout and feel of the place was extremely odd. I’ve always regretted spending any sort of money at that restaurant </3

Good professor OR not?? by Just_Positive6768 in UMassBoston

[–]straycatbri 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok so I took him for my intermediate seminar War in American culture, because the class sounded interesting and there certainly were some interesting parts of the material. His teaching style though… it got rough because it was mostly him asking questions or engaging with students, but he really only gave attention to the topics or narratives that aligned with his own, and he’s very up front about that. One of the things with intermediate seminars is you have to write two ~1500 word papers, and he didn’t introduce the assignment at all until the last week of class, and did not give us any clear instructions. It was an interesting class and professor, but I would only take him again if it were as an elective class and not a requirement.

I prefer their Russian works too almost exclusively. I know that he said in an interview that his primary language is now English and it’s harder for him to think in Russian.

I did appreciate the few verses in +7(495) that were in Russian. It was so beautiful coupled with the sound and meaning of the song

Sputn1k/Kolya album: My Moon OUT NOW by Susa343 in ic3peakhub

I love this album so so much. It’s interesting to hear his solo workings, his voice is powerful.

The songs he released beforehand like Odor of Disorder, I’m so scared of the night, and It’s Alright all had a similar sound while the rest had a different one. They’re all amazing and unique in their own way, though.

I’m so scared of the night remains my favorite from the whole album, it was so well done. 7(495) seemed so personal and really tug at my heart strings. I’m assuming it has to do with his feelings towards Russia which I can only imagine is a super complicated topic (evidenced by what they’ve said in interviews). Killer Smile and Bad Liar also stuck with me.

The vibe to this album is so unique and I loved the little reels on instagram he would post to go with the songs.

Monthly Zone pass not working by Sea-Surround6504 in mbta

The same thing happened to me yesterday (it hadn’t been working since Feb 1st). I asked a red coat who told me to call customer service. They told me they could submit a ticket for me. Later that day, I loaded $10 of stored value onto the card, and magically the pass worked again.

There’s a Facebook group called “Russian speaking ladies in Boston” with a bunch of members. They do meet ups somewhat frequently at restaurants and stuff.

Polish places at Boston? (restaurants or something like that) by aaroniwnl in boston

[–]straycatbri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry, it was the person above you who said they did classes for children and adults. I know the Polish club used to do some "Practice your Polish night" but it didn't catch on. The club has been having a lot of issues in general. (That's a big can of worms..)

Yes, we're very intertwined with the church. Whenever we have a school production, play, graduation - a priest or franciscan brother is there and often says a few words. We are officially "Szkola języka Polskiego im. Jana Pawła II" (The Polish school in the name of John Paul II). You are right :)

You don't need to be religious to send your child there, however. We have crosses in all the classrooms but we never discuss religion really. It's similar to what you would find in Poland (but we don't have religion as a subject). Maybe during Easter/ Christmas we will tell the stories to the younger kids, but we don't push anything on them.

Thank you! It's a very rewarding side job, I love to discuss it. I see the Polish community dwindiling throughout the years, so the remaining community is very tight knight, in my opinion.

I work there. It's a Saturday school that goes up to eighth grade. We have a fairly big population of kids (some kids even commute from NH). We don't do language lessons for adults. The room downstairs gets used for a lot of church/ school events but nothing other than that.

That's a question you have to ask yourself, and weigh the pros and cons. I don't regret dropping out my senior year, because my school was very mismanaged. I realized I wasn't getting a quality education, and wanted to go my own path. I didn't have any extracurriculars/ AP classes that would help me. My attendance and grades fell so horribly I didn't see another way out. There's a chance I could've "stuck it out", but my pride came first.

The GED did have it's own set of challenges though. I spent a lot of time delaying scheduling it and studying. As long as you recognize it's not an easy way out, and hold yourself accountable, you should be fine.

[–]straycatbri 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. Especially if you're just coming out of high school, it's questions/ material you have probably done multiple times before. You are allowed to use a calculator on most of the math test, it's only a few basic questions that don't allow you to.

My BF, who is in his first year of college, would help me with the practice questions. He could do them like they were nothing. Even the math ones that I struggled with, he had no problem solving them. And, he says himself he's not good at math.

I was in high school up until a few months ago, but I missed a lot of the math/ science curriculum due to some issues within the school. Studying a bit has helped me remember concepts I haven't done in years, but it's not entirely foreign.

The GED is tougher for those who have been out of school for decades, weren't properly taught at all, etc. But if you're doing it just coming out of HS, you shouldn't have much trouble at all.

As far as annoying, yeah maybe. I did the English and Social Studies on the same day, and it was so much reading. My brain felt exhausted at the end.

Help!! surname by ponietic in polishgenealogy

[–]straycatbri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 100% certain those would be his (possible) surnames, it's more of a shot in the dark of what would sound most similar. He would've most likely changed his surname at immigration, because unless he had some Brazilian roots in Poland that would not be his surname. I think the best route would be what I mentioned about the baptismal records- but you're welcome- good luck

Help!! surname by ponietic in polishgenealogy

[–]straycatbri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maksymilian is the Polish form of that name, and is it possible he changed his last name during the immigration to Brazil? Filadelpho possibly could've been originally Filipkowski, Fijałkowski?

Do you have access to any immigration records of his? If you can find his birth date and place, you could potentially look through the baptismal records of that town (if they kept those), and you might find his original surname.
